Would appreciate any input on whether the newer Forge 8.0 included in this bundle is worth getting compared to just using an old XC 5.0 battery and hacking the below deal:

I wouldn't be doing anything too crazy, just casual occasional yard use, not logging.

Change my mind:

A significantly cheaper reciprocating saw with a wood cutting blade does roughly the same job?

I've never had anything that my $60 recip couldn't do that wasn't worth bringing out the gas chainsaw - but I appreciate there may be a niche in the 5-10" branch thickness range - maybe I just havent hit that often enough yet
I agree. Between owning the Milwaukee sawzall, hackzall, and Dewalt chainsaw on clearance at Home Depot recently, this is tough to justify.

I agree 100%. I bought some pruning blades for my milwaukee sawzall. I go out in the woods to make 4 wheeler trails and I can cut trees up to as big as the blade is and cut stuff down until I can't move any more with an 8ah battery. Plus the blade is flexible so I can cut small trees right up next to the ground so I don't get a flat tire from running over the brush.
This thing is just a toy...

This is a good deal. I bought this as a kit with the charger and 6.0 HO battery for $225 three years ago. I've been watching for another one for my other property and jumped on this deal. I use this thing every week for cutting up small limbs and invasive vines and I'm still on the original chain. I previously used the M18 hackzall but got tired of my hand vibrating, going through blades, and not being able to hack through vines efficiently. It does leak oil unlike the hackzall, but if you store it with the cap facing up it's not a big deal. I've taken down some 15" soft wood trees and this thing kept on going. Rarely do I use my gas chainsaw anymore and only keep it around in case of a hurricane. I tend to run out of energy before a 5.0 battery, but I don't use this for a living. When a 5.0 runs out, that's a good time for a break and to spray stumps with herbicide lol. Truly surprised me how useful this thing is. When I researched it, everyone said skip the M12 and buy the M18 and I don't regret that advice.

I doubt I'll change your mind, especially since this is apples to kumquats. I was cleaning up a number of trees and using an Ego 56V pole saw to get the limbs down. Then I would use my one-handed M18 with a pruning blade, which I have satisfactorily used on a number of other projects) to further downsize. After a while I ended up using the pole saw on nearly everything, even though it was awkward at length. Granted, that's 18V vs 56V, but I think the real difference was the reciprocating motion and blade vs the circular motion chain saw blade. I think this battery closes the gap even further. Certainly it depends on the size, quantity and circumference, of your project. I am looking forward to giving this a try, especially with this battery.

Yes, I have wood cutting reciprocating blades. But you're not going to convince me that a reciprocating saw is better than a chain saw at cutting wood.
Reciprocating blade users are wild at heart man.
