I think the a1 or a1 mini are great printers to get someone started if cost is a constraining factor. Just understand the smaller size of the mini will limit you from printing some things. At 179 for a a1 mini you're entering into the ender 3 price range with a printer that is leaps and bounds above Enders in ease of use and quality.

You'll probably find others that will say get the combo, but for me, the single color A1 has been a great choice.
(Having said that, you'll shortly end up buying more in filament cost than the price of the printer...so it may not matter after a year or two).
I saw that offer when I was checking out but I assumed it was for using a Venmo Credit Card, which I didn't want and skipped over it. Perhaps I messed up?
I still ended up snagging the A1M for $180 minus $30 TikTok discount. I missed out on the $170 price a couple times cause I was too slow, but $153+shipping was still a really good deal. I just wish I looked at the Venmo offer closer, but I was trying to checkout ASAP so I didn't lose out on another flash price drop.

I spent $305.16 total for the A1M combo ($333.98 + 20 shipping - $41.50 for TikTok Check-ins & Referral -$35 Venmo), which is completely insane for this printer considering how well it prints. Again, I'd be super salty if I wasn't able to do that fake TikTok referral (used an old phone; installed and created "new" referral account; boom, instant credit). I tried to do more referrals since they had additional money they'd give you after reaching certain thresholds, but it didn't work on the same phone lol. I figured $40 + the venmo stuff was more than enough to justify upgrading to the combo and was afraid the price would go up yet again. The regular A1 flash sale was super tempting at $269.99 too, but I knew I wanted to multicolor print more than bigger volume after playing with my current A1M.

At first glance the A1 mini Christmas bundle looks like amazing value...getting 4 spools for $10 each, but with added shipping it turns into about $14 per spool...still better than the best bulk discount which is $16 each, but if the Xmas colors aren't ideal you may prefer to get the A1 mini alone ...

Oh well, this is my first dip into 3D printing, so my original thought was that if I end up really getting into it, I could always upgrade and get an A1 combo later.

You would want to purchase some filament either from Bambu directly or 3rd Party. I would probably just pick up a roll of PLA from Bambu for simplicity's sake.
The combo comes with the AMS addon. This will automatically change colors for you in multi-color prints, or just let you keep multiples of the same filament on so you can use up the whole roll and it will automatically switch to a new spool. Its not necessary but a very nice convenience and opens up more possibilities.
These really are designed to print 3 types of plastic, PLA, PETG, TPU. None of these require enhanced ventilation but you should probably make sure you aren't printing them in a tiny enclosed room while occupied.
They do create little piles of filament waste (affectionately known as printer poop) but that is easily contained in a bin you can print.

it does require a stable table to put it on, that is it.
