For wildlife you'd want the Z6III or ZF for the Exceed 7 AF, or of course the Z8/Z9.

For landscapes I think any of the full frame are fine, though of course more pixels is better. In fact the Z8 would be ideal for you, and it has a great crop mode with 19 MP. They did have refurb Z8s for $2400 a few months ago, dunno if that'll come back.

I'd go mirrorless if you want certain lenses. Like for wildlife there's awesome choices like the 100-400, 180-600, 400 f/4.5 etc. Nothing quite as good for Nikon DSLR.
I'm spoiled with my 28-300 - just seems to be lagging a bit lately. Or I am lagging...

That depends on your budget to be honest.. there are some amazing wildlife mirrors less but price is key. I have an a1 and it's insane but there are much cheaper/better now from Cannon and Nikon. It's just insane though how it can freeze an object at 50mp with no shutter and you don't get any distortion.
My passion is hummingbirds - those wings! I can work and wait for them to visit.

To give you better context than just naming the newer generation that would obviously be better than the last DSLR gen...

The Nikon D500 was for many one of the best wildlife/sports lenses with regards to APS-C giving you even more reach with telephoto lenses (1.5x crop), but had a decently high frame rate at 10fps... To put in perspective, current gen, the Z50 (the entry level model before the Z30 came out) shoots 11fps.

It's not a direct comparison by any means and the 200 photo buffer in the D500 is still awesome, but there really is no reason to stick to DSLRs anymore if your goal is getting the best blanket performance.

Almost every Nikon mirror less is better than than their DSLRs at least in measurements of the pros vs cons.
Thank you!

Nice deal, if you don't shoot sports or wildlife this is a great camera. I wish the lens was $400 by itself.
What? Nonsense. You are obviously not a wildlife, birder, or likely a Nikon shooter as this camera is very popular in the field. I see them often at the nature preserves I visit here in N Cal. Try to actually post facts about the camera.

Junk. In 2024, it is still a 5 FPS camera. I would recommend to get a Canon RP for a 500 bucks used.
Right from the specs of the camera:

Continuous Shooting Options

"Low-speed continuous: 1-5 fps, High-speed continuous: 5.5 fps, High-speed continuous (extended): 14 fps (14-bit NEF/RAW: Approx. 10 fps), Maximum frame advance rate as measured by in house tests"

Did you even research this before making your comment?

Just bought Z8 with 24-120mm f/4 S for $3600 with this deal. Been waiting a while for this. Missed the Black Friday sale (lens kit version sold out). Can't wait to get out there and start shooting.
That's lucky cause the 24-120 refurb has been out of stock for a long time. Seems only available in kits.

I'm trying to get my wife a good entry level camera with good video capabilities. We just purchased the Panasonic Lumix dc S5 with 20-60 mm lens. Would this be a better option? I know the Panasonic was new and this is refurbished but if this is a better camera I'd rather go with this. Thoughts? We mostly take pictures of our kids in their sporting events but really want good video capabilities as well. Thank you in advance!

lol try shooting wildlife with a z30 and D500 and report back. There's so much more than fps. There's a reason people pay $4000 for Z8s, it's for the autofocus, the faster EVF, the lack of shutter lag etc. the 60Hz EVF of a Z30 or Z6II isn't well suited to fast moving subjects and it'll black out during fast shooting.

Then there's the lenses. The 200-500 refurb was going for $600 recently, 1/3 the cost of a good Z lens like the 180-600. You can of course mount that on a Z body, but it'll be very unbalanced on the smaller bodies.

What are you getting all hurt for? I said mirror less pros beat the cons of DSLR. And while I used the FPS of 10 vs 11 (a single point), I didn't say a Z50 wins out on every metric to a D500.

You missed the point entirely as a Z50 is what price compared to a D500?

My point stands. Yours is just noise.

If you mean the Z5 it's fine if you don't shooting fast subjects. Many people have no need for that. Even a lot of wildlife don't need high fps.

Well there's a 28-400 for Z now, though I'd recommend the 24-200 for you, it's very sharp, the wider end is nice for landscapes and the superzooms aren't very sharp on the long end anyway.

Honestly you don't want to spend $2500-4000 on a Z6III or Z8 and pair it with a super zoom lens. The Z6II would be just as good.

When he wrote that there was no Z6III and the Z8 was $4000. Sure at this price the Z6II is hard to beat, but if you can stretch the budget you really want an exceed 7 camera for fast moving subjects.

The problem with the High Speed Continuous Extended is the viewfinder lags what you're shooting. So if you know what your subject is going to do, say a skateboarder doing a jump, it's fine. But if it's a bird in flight or basketball player, you won't be able to track their movements in the viewfinder very well while shooting 10/14 fps.

ZF, Z6III or Z8 don't have this issue.

D500 is better for wildlife or sports than Exceed 6 mirrorless cameras like the Z6II. For reasons I mentioned above.

D500 users need an Exceed 7 camera just to match what they have.
