Thanks @Iconian, picked one up for the jam room. This thing hit 100db on the reviews, so hoping I can use it with a clean 5.1 set and not have to buy a whole powered PA setup to jam along to my favorite tunes. Anyhow my friend thanks for all the great deals thru the years and hope you have a happy holiday season brotha!

I'm on my 3rd Onkyo receiver. First was great, second was pretty good, and the new one I got a year ago, the TX-NR6050, is straight up trash. I think I'm done with Onkyo receivers after this one.

Got this receiver a couple days ago for a 3.1 system. Setup and calibration was easy enough and the HDMI 2.1 ports work well as advertised. My last avr was a refurbished Denon that lasted about 3 years, just long enough to not be under warranty.

There is no home theater receiver that doesn't support hooking up only two speakers for stereo

I would agree. I only bought one receiver, but it completely died on me after like 4 years.

I have a tx-sr444 in a 3.1 setup. Works well except can't handle 4k hdr 60. Other than that, would it be worth upgrading to this? Speakers are jbl studio 530 and the matching center.

My bad. I meant two different set - a 5.2 set for living room and then couple of patio speakers.

Can someone provide insight as to why some people in previous threads say this avr is worthless?

Because some people are idiots that think everybody should use a soundbar. This is a solid entry level receiver.

If I were to guess, if you're not going to take advantage of the .2 in the 5.2 setup, you're over paying. Also, if you're just needing sound to say less than a 5.1 setup and are okay with optical instead of HDMI, you're definitely overpaying. At that point you could get a less than $50 used optical 5.1 receiver from early 00's. They apparently last longer then some of this new stuff. The last statement, I can attest to. I've got about 15 from that era and they just keep on working.

Just bought this last week. Definitely worth the price. Handled my 5 speakers and big subwoofer great. No more clipping on my speakers or annoying humming sound on my subwoofer. Should def buy if you're considering this.
