You are supposed to add it to the rinse cycle and let it soak like 15 minutes
So for traditional top load machines that means manually stopping the machine mid wash to add it and then waiting a while to restart.
on HE/Front loaders, it can go in the fabric softener compartment ..but you still want to make sure it soaks in it for the required time
