While I got mine from Woot, I just noticed something that potentially could make this an even sweeter deal.

"PowerBlock has partnered with Flex to allow qualified customers to use their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA). This means you may be able to use your HSA or FSA debit card to buy PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells and compatible accessories with pre-tax dollars, resulting in net savings of 30-40%."

Obviously that is very YMMV, but if it works for you and you have FSA funds to burn before the end of the year, paying with pre-tax dollars would knock the "real" cost down a lot.

If I hadn't just emptied out this year's FSA to cover orthodontia and bought the Woot deal, I'd be tempted to try it.
If you are in the market and missed the Woot app deal, this is probably the one to pick up.

It isn"t quite as good of a deal as the recent Woot app deal was if you ordered everything separately to reapply the coupon ($388 total), but better than the usual popular Woot deal for everything that works out to $490 total.

I am skeptical that we will see a coupon like that again soon, so this is probably the best deal for the foreseeable future. Woot will likely have them back on their "regular" sale price to cash in on the New Year resolutions, and you could save about $20 off this deal by getting the three stages from Woot and picking up the $50 FitRx stand from Walmart.

That said, the PowerMax stand is very nice and worth the extra $20 over the Walmart stand.
Definitely see your point. Standard dumbbell shape is always going to be nicer, but I do like how the size changes with the weight on these vs most of the standard changeable dumbbells where the handle is a static length. I like that I can lay them flat on my legs instead of having the handle digging into my thighs.

I have the elite 90's and got them back in 2020 and I use them practically daily. I had the same initial concern about the plastic weight pin but I've thrown these around a lot and I've never once had them come loose or anything. I've never had a single issue with them and they've been fantastic IMO. Honestly price for durability and performance is killer on this deal. I would suggest anyone that is interested in a home gym snag these, but as you stated, make sure that the shape is something you're okay with because they are different. I think it might take a bit getting used to, but afterwards you'll love them.

This is a general comment on a subjective experience - might be good for people to know who are particular about their dumbbells.

My experience is one in which I prefer the standard dumbbell shape even if I have to place on home station to adjust the weights. These power blocks are well exactly that - bulky and blocky - even with the plastic weight changing half ring I just don't feel super secure with these. Just an opinion even if not what most experience. I wanted to like these… :/

Out of curiosity, do you own them, or did you try them at a gym?

Asking because I've found I simply get used to whatever I use regularly and always feel awkward in the beginning if I'm switching to something different. Not arguing against your experience, but just wondering if this is short-term or long-term.

I have the Pro EXP and felt similarly to you the first few times, but I really like them now and don't feel any awkwardness at all.

Depends on the weight. @90lbs the size difference between powerblock vs std DB lessens.

I had a set of powerblocks before switching over to selecttech 1090 almost 15 years ago. It really doesn't take much time to get used to the shape. In fact i would say selecttech 1090s are way too big once you get up to a certain weight.

I appreciate both of your educational and helpful comments - yes - very short term experience. Your comments are both reassuring and I will continue to keep them in my routine / rotation.

I will say - once the pin is in the correct location it does feel sturdy. I just didn't have any long term experience to know how resilient but thanks for sharing that these can tolerate being tossed even. Smilie

Re: the shape - def will take a bit of time lol. But will definitely see if I get used to them.

Thanks for the advice and help.

I actually prefer these to a lot of regular or adjustable dumbbells. They rest comfortably on your leg before doing presses and are comfortable for flies and rows.

The only issue would be tri extensions or anything 2 handed. I've had mine for over 5 years and they have taken a beating lol.

One concern I had with the (at least more popular brands of) dumbbell-style adjustables is that they make engineering concessions for that form factor. In most cases (when I was researching a couple years or so ago) the concession is a single irreplaceable point of failure. And which does actually fail in practice on e.g drops or over time after enough adjustments.

I'd be curious on the state of the art on that form factor today but it wasn't great a few years ago tmk.

These PowerBlocks are a brain dead simple mechanism by comparison, if you can aesthetically forgive the polypropylene weight selector pin.

If you have GovX account you can save an additional 10% off. I got $49 off the sale price.

I've had the classic 50 for over 15 years and they've held up great. I wanted to buy the expansion pack for them however power block no longer sells them for the classic 50. These dumbbells are great and will last you a long time if you take care of them.

Yeah I have both these PowerBlocks as well as some of the NordicTrac brand style "just slide the pin around" dumbbells.

While the shape is more traditional "dumbbell" and the selection mechanism is a little faster, I would never trust that style to go as heavy as the PowerBlocks. I've accidentally rotated the weight selector on those and a plate has just fallen right out and they're super plasticky.

I wish the pin in the PowerBlocks was metal but due to the way the plates interact with it the amount of shearing force is actually very small. You'd notice well in advance if the plastic were getting brittle, unlike the easy select ones where so much is hidden.

tldr you can trust these things.

Also the max weight of 90 lbs is impressive and not many of the other style even get that high. If you're doing leg work you don't want anything lighter than these for sure.

I picked these up from Woot but with a different stand. They are great. I use them regularly at their full range for everything from lighter weight shoulder work to heavy RDLs.

I have zero complaints. Just know that these aren't compatible with the kettlebell handles.

What makes the PowerMax stand that much better than the FitRX one? I bought Stage 1+2+3 during BF, but did not pick up the stand.

Also, for those buying, there are several codes that will knock off $20.
