it's 2024, that makes no sense for an ordinary desktop to choose the mouse, keyboard, and monitor to you. I can choose those for myself, please deduct the cost of those from my computer.

Good way to get the student discount while supporting a local chain store.

Not really, the real difference between this and that M2 is that this has double the ram (16gb).

Does anyone know if this can run the Samsung G95NC (Neo Odyssey G9 57") at native res (7680x2160) at least at 60hz or if I need the M4 Pro for that? I currently have a Mac Studio M1 Ultra, but having to use side by side on the monitor with 2 outputs to reach that resolution is really bothering me. With the dual outputs/side by side I get some tearing in the middle of the screen when I scroll - it seems like the HDMI and the DisplayPort outputs have some difference in speed, even if both are set to 120hz. I know there's probably a big difference in CPU performance from my M1 Ultra to the M4 base in CPU intensive tasks, but I'd be willing to give it a try if I had confirmation that the display issue was fixed.

Update: Never mind. I looked at the specs on the Apple website and I see it does in dual display mode (they mention up to 8K60 in USB-C), however I believe it will be a big impact in terms of performance and also the 16GB RAM vs 64GB of my Ultra plus the GPU hit, which is really important for my use case, so I'll have to pass. Thanks for the OP though, this is a great price on a very capable machine.

if I had $500 to spend, I would think of upgrading. Remember the time when you bought a new computer and it came with a mouse and keyboard?
I guess those days are in the rear view mirror at this point.
Did you last buy a PC in the 90's?

Might be worth it to upgrade from that IBM Aptiva lmao

Yes, this is definitely gaming capable. It's more powerful than a current gen Xbox Series S by a large margin, and games are being natively optimized for the M chip. Just don't expect discrete GPU level performance. Some games live, Cyperpunk at 4:16s https://youtu.be/iXVTt1pYTrw?si=2Twyz_0fEO3ztY5w
today I learned about this commercially supported version of WINE.

Adguard home running on my router is taking care of the ads blocking for me.
Did you have to pay for their premium service? Any links to recommended "how-to" guides? I'm very interested in duplicating this, hulu and peacock ads on ATV are too much

I bought one as my first Mac ever and I feel ashamed because I use it as an Apple TV. But to my credit, I can block ads on Brave but not with TVos apps.

External SSD is a must. BG3 alone is over 150gb+

Has anyone successfully used a Microcenter desktop computer coupon on one of these Mac minis?
Where does one find such a coupon?

Ad guard home is free but you have to host it. The easiest method is by getting an Openwrt router. You can also flash Openwrt on several routers a little more advanced. If you already own a NAS you can also host it on a NAS (synology, qnap.....) Or a low power server like a cheap raspberry pi. If you don't wanna do all that just get their lifetime family plan off Stacksocial for one time $16

Since this is a desktop with thunderbolt ports, and not a laptop that will be on the move, I think the best value and performance will be to get the cheapest storage version and add a multi-terabyte high-speed external drive, or even a NAS depending on needs.
Issue with that is the thunderbolt gets hot so hot you can't let it stay connected all the time. It makes more sense on a laptop not desktop. Both cable and enclosure will get destroyed plus it will force the Mini to run hot which defeat the purpose of getting a small quiet desktop.

Unless someone uses apps that tax the M4 GPU, the M2 open box BestBuy $279~ is the better (cost vs performance) buy.
Was able to get it for $275 for the m2 version. Amazing value and the device was in excellent condition.
