Just received mine. It's a honeycomb-type filter with charcoal pellets in each of the hundreds of honeycomb sections. Plus a true HEPA filter

My issue with this older unit is the size. Very bulky. If you want a tabletop form factor with a slightly better CADR (141 vs 135), the Core 300-P [amazon.com] isn't too bad at $79 from AMZN

I don't recommend this unit at any price. I have three of them and three are dead. They have defective capacitors in the power supply. The bad capacitors can be replaced at minimum cost; just check YouTube if you are handy with a soldering iron. There's also a designed flaw where the camber behind the filter is not airtight so some airflow through the unit without going through the filter.

We had two of these in our home for about 1.5 years and they stopped working (a couple months apart). The top of the unit(s) had a red light and would not respond to any inputs. I wasted waaaay too much time trying to fix them until I finally moved on.

Can anyone confirm if the carbon filter has actual pellets or is the regular charcoal dipped foam? The pellets are much more legit for removing VOCs. The best ones use real charcoal blocks
