I've been needing something like this, but not quite.

Is there a kind of pry bar, puller, etc where it goes in flat/rigid (no hook coming out), then once inside you can release it from the handle so that it opens up a hook to pull?

For example, think of lifting up deck boards with limited space. Have a tool that can slide between the boards then once in you can push a button and it extends a hook that you can lift up on? Or like they showed in the manhole, if you had something like that and a smaller hole you could insert and then release a hooking mechanism that can then pull up?

Whats your exact use case? Many automotive pullers should do this I believe but might not suit your needs if your use case is deck boards as that tolerance is very small. Im pretty sure you can use the two prong puller with the lips facing outwards and as you thread the knob in it will push the prongs out. Autozone rents them out for free also

Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

Different product but close to what I meant (see 6th picture):

Deck boards is one example, but I've had others I can't think of right now where I've wanted to insert a rod in a small space, then be able to pull back on the rod to pull something toward me.

I could use these for my freezer, I sell frozen food and sometimes the freezer leaks in the rain and the boxes freeze to the bottom and I can't break them loose. The problem is these will cut through the boxes for sure. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for a way to spread the force like a spatula and get it under the boxes without cutting into it.

What about a metal or plastic wood splitting wedge that you can hammer into place to create a small Gap so that you can slide in a sideways hook and then spin it 90° so the hook faces up or down so that you can then pull on the item?

Then you can pull out the wedge from the hole on the back of it using a small crowbar or sturdy screwdriver as a lever and part of the deck is a fulcrum point .

What about putting some wire or plastic grates on the bottom between the freezer and the food. Such as https://a.co/d/iPhBsmv
