The Bosch GDX18V-1800 Two-in-One 1/4 In. and 1/2 In. Bit/Socket Impact Driver/Wrench is for use with bits and sockets, going from impact wrench to impact driver fast. It lets you do two jobs with one tool, with the two-in-one bit/socket drive that offers a 1/4 In. quick-change hex shank holder with power groove for bits, and a 1/2 In. square drive for sockets. The impact driver/wrench’s efficient, powerful brushless cordless motor produces up to 1, 800 In.-Lbs. of torque, while the Bosch hammer-and-anvil system provide maximum impact energy and up to 0-4, 200 impacts per minute. The variable-speed trigger provides accurate driving speed. The two-in-one bit/socket drive increases both convenience and power. Bits can stay conveniently inserted when using deep sockets, and more torque is transferred directly thru the 1/2 In. square drive anvil. There is no more torque loss through socket adapters or broken socket adapters. The driver has an LED light to illuminate the work area. The kit comes with one 18V 2 Ah Standard Power Battery and an 18V charger. Bosch 18-volt 1/4-in 1/2-in Brushless Cordless Impact Driver (1-Battery, Charger and Soft Bag included) | GDX18V-1800B12

I'm assuming that's a good thing, given this is brushless ?
Also, stupid question: Would this be overkill for DIY projects around the home, like assembling furniture, drilling holes in studs for frames, tightening screws, loosening tight nuts in simple equipment, etc. ?
If so, would you recommend a 12V drill for that ?

Not at all. This thing is amazing. Highly recommend for what you need it for

Keep in mind that this is an impact driver, which does not have a chuck. You will need special hex drill bits to drill holes. It's best used to drive long and big screws and one can easily strip small screws using this.

Responding to Avisap: This is not a drill, it has a 1/4 for driver bits. You can use it as a drill if you buy drill bits with 1/4 shank or use 1/2 sockets if you work on auto. Impact drivers have a built in hammering mode to drive the screw or nut without excessive torque on your wrist.

Keep in mind that even though this can use 1/2" drive sockets, it still only has the torque typical of impact drivers. While 1800 in-lbs might be enough to drive screws and lags, it'll struggle in many mechanical applications.
Agreed 18-20v overkill around house diy. 12v much better easier to use. I had the 18v bosch compact drill it was still somewhat big and more power than what I need.
Switch to Skil 12v so much better and lots of power for all my home diy. Most 12v nowadays are up there with many of older 18v power.
Check out skil 12 2x battery kit usbc $80 + choice free tool. Got the impact wrench and it does indeed remove lug nuts.
Thank you to all who've chimed in with your ideas and thoughts.
As you can see, I'm out of my depth here, intending to use this for both driving screws into a drywall or stud, or using it to tighten/loosen nuts.
If a 12V Skil is a better bet, I'm considering this one for my home projects (assembling furniture, drilling screws into walls/studs, tightening or loosening nuts in my dining chairs, earthquake-proofing my book shelves, etc.)

I'm hoping if you could let me know if this fits the bill ?
Should do it. Sold my bosch gsr18v-400b12 18v for this exact one. Couldn't be happier check it out at Lowes it maybe on sale in store 39.99. Most of the ones I see at Lowes now come with USB-C battery/charger. I think its longer charge time and you lose out on pwr jumper feature (25% in 5 mins) vs standard charger. Gain usbc + fast charging output which is good for big smartphone/tablets.

My most used is one of these Bosch brushless chameleon drivers and I'd recommend it: https://slickdeals.net/f/17904444-bosch-12v-max-2-tool-combo-kit-w-chameleon-drill-driver-oscillating-multi-tool-149-free-shipping?utm_te
