it has 2 nvme slots for storage and upgradable ram, 2x ddr5. i have it, great laptop. i think weight is just right, not too heavy like other gaming laptops but it's not slimmest either. power brick is OK sized.
thunderbolt 4 port is a nice addition. i 've seen $1000 gaming laptops missing TB4 port, dunno why.
Right now, this is the best gaming laptop for $500 and under. It will play fortnight and most games at 1080p.

I apologize for the noob question.
Im on a super tight budget and need a laptop for 7th grader that can play fortnite reliably.
Is this a good, or even best option for $500?
I appreciate any help you can give this cave man!
Absolutely good enough for Fortnite.

Really hoping you may be able to help me out also with deciding between the laptops posted and this one:

I know there is a $100 price difference and the one I've linked is refurbished, but would it be worth the additional funds? It's for a gift for a moderate gamer and just curious if this would be more "future-proof" if that makes sense.

I have very little knowledge when it comes to these things and just trying to weigh my options while sticking to a pretty tight budget. Refurbished is basically a non-factor as the recipient really wouldn't mind.

That one had an RTX 4050, everything else is about the same except maybe for the Thunderbolt 4 port.
isn't a 4050 way better for the same price?

The laptop Rtx3050 (6 GB) should already be around the same ballpark as the 6550M (4 GB ?). The only differences would be prices and memory system/GPU RAM. If prices are the same, I would go with a Microenter laptop because the Nvidia Firmware Driver is always more stable than AMD. More RAM memory in GPU/System is always better in my opinion. Plus, no need to upgrade RAM compared to the Best Buy HP laptop.

Except right now, there are issues with the Nvidia driver because they want to push us to use the stupid App driver all in one and they did F-ups of the FPS. So just used the firmware drive from June or July or before the app driver.

I would definitely get this if I had the money, I added it to my bookmarks for later if it comes on sale again. Thx op

Just curious on what other people's experiences with the lifetime of a laptop has been for them?
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 7559, bought it in 2016 and I upgraded the hard drive for the os to one of those card drives. Laptop works fine other than the battery going bad 4 years ago so I just use it plugged in wall, but my storage drive seems to be making more noise recently and taking a bit longer to wake up when it goes into sleep mode.
I have had two of the Acer Nitro 5 AN515 models break at the hinges on the screen side. Google Acer broken hinge and there will be quite a few results. I've seen both the metal hinge break, as well as the plastic that the hinge screws into break.

i can't find their TGP info (total graphics power - ranging from ~30W to ~80W), but if they have similar TGP, the recipient would most likely prefer the refurb (rtx 4050) than this deal (rtx 3050).
you want the higher end of the TGP. more power = faster, but you sacrifice more electricity usage (less battery run time) and heavier (larger heatsink to dissipate the generated heat).
