all that means is they overpaid during the year.
but this concept escapes most tax payers.
With regard to free federal filing, the options from the IRS aren't for everyone, but they do cover A LOT of people. Additionally, FreeTaxUSA, OLT, Cash App all have free federal filing without income limits and covering almost all individual tax situations.
If you took a test and didn't scored 100%, then you would expect the instructor to point out the errors in the test. The IRS simply sent a letter requiring an additional $200-$300 without providing an explanation.
I have no problem using FreeTaxUSA if I can download the software and install it on my computer. There is NO WAY I will upload my financial info to a FreeTaxUSA!

FYI your data goes through Intuit servers on the way to the IRS when you e-file. It's in the license agreement actually.
Now if the IRS is sending you a letter later, that's different than just owing money at the end of completing your return. The IRS absolutely should explain where the discrepancy is and I believe they're obligated to do so. But any of the tax softwares should calculate things in the same way and give the same result. It's basic math as long as the same numbers go in the same place. This used to happen to my dad occasionally when he did it on paper with a calculator back in the day lol

A co-worker of mine once refused a raise because he said it would put him in a higher tax bracket and he would end up paying more money as a result than the raise was worth....
And again, this was a generally brilliant guy who knows more about most other things than anyone would ever care to know. But he didn't have even a basic rudimentary understanding about how tax brackets worked.
Fortunately for him, I do and helped him fix that bad decision.

2. Per my previous post, no explanation. Just a generic statement asking for an additional $200-$300 by certain date. There's a number to call if I disagree with the letter. I reported an extra $700 in qualified dividend last year as a test. Still got the "you owed us more $ letter". Probably a rookie IRS agent trying to work up the ladder.
3. All tax programs should arrive at the same number. Rounding all numbers to the nearest dollar should not alter the final tax bill.
