The issue with 8gb ram and 256gb ssd is that the ssd has a short tbw (lifespan) and 8gb increases likelihood of swapping which constantly uses up the tbw limit. Once ssd life is used up then it would be just trash since you cant replace the internal ssd. So with this one make sure to always use an external drive and avoid using the internal
We'll be sure to worry about this in 20 or 30 years, when it's an actual problem. Until then, please stop repeating YouTube clickbait that hasn't actually happened.

Is this computer faster for photo editing than the late 2015 iMac Retina with 32 GB of RAM?
Is a 2023 machine faster than a 2015 machine? Err...yeah. Smilie

Of course, if you run something that eats RAM for lunch, then it's less clear. But yes, I still expect it to be far faster.

It hardly takes 5 years for a highly swapping SSD to fail.

Ai Hype Train=Apple Intelligence. We can thank the Ai bubble for finally forcing Apple to move off 8gb after a decade. M4 base would still have 8gb base if it weren't for it.
Based on what?

Please provide examples. Since Apple's been shipping SSDs and 8GB systems for a decade plus now, you should be able to find millions of examples.

No?

You can always resell it for the same price if you feel its too slow for you. I wasnt going to buy open box for 300$, but a new one will try tomorrow.

I got this model when it came out. The 8gb isn't the best and nor is the 256. But I use it mostly for photo editing and research/writing. It works perfectly fine for all of that. I also use an SSD for photo backups so it's just my Lightroom backup it holds. Not the most effective tbh but if you're in a pinch, it's a good piece of hardware. Got the satechi hub for it and it's helped expand capabilities.

I doubt very much you'd get $325 (tax considered) for this on the open market. Arrival of m4 has nosedived old machine pricing.

(Looks at eBay)

I stand corrected. Stunning.

I am pretty sure it will be sold for several days max for 300$ on local craiglist. Tax loss doesnt count as it can be sold for 350$. But i am just sure that for 300$ it will be blown away.

Apple discontinued the 8gb base models even in the macbook air. They also even upped the ram on the iphone 16 base models all for Apple Intelligence.

Yes, but what leads you to believe the reason for 16GB is Apple AI ?
