Some other caveats to be aware of: no HDR, 60 Hz, no VRR, slow response time, mediocre constrast/black uniformity

Many photo/video editors will care about those aspects, especially lack of HDR and the mediocre contrast/black uniformity. I'm not saying it's a bad monitor, I'm just saying it has some drawbacks to be aware of.

Solid monitor for text and vector work.

Mediocre for photo and video.

I know they are for different applications, but a 77" C3 is nearly the same price now. Decisions decisions

It's just another Apple tax. "We screwed up on the engineering, so we're sticking you with overpriced monitors. Our bad. Pay up!"

Windows does fractional scaling without any issue I've seen. A handful of ancient programs just look small. I'm running 225% scaling here on a 13" 3840x1400 display in windows, and the text is delightfully sharp. I run a 4k 48" OLED display at 100%, and I just wish I had an 8k for more ppi.

So if you find that 27" and non-fractional scaling on apple is what you want, go for it. Just pay through the nose like you must.

I appreciate the detailed explanation. In the end, it seems Mac's OS is designed to only look good with very high ppi displays, which on the larger side of monitors (27" or larger) is a 5K+ display which there are very few choices and Apple doesn't seem to be interested in updating their display line. They don't even have a 5K iMac anymore. The old days of scaling and issues with apps in Windows is mostly not an issue as modern apps seem to scale correctly, no matter which scaling you choose (at least in my experience).

I use a 2560x1440p 27" with my Mac Mini (M4) and it looks decent. A 4K screen looks worse.

macOS just seems
It's designed to look optimal on high ppi screens. I have a plain old 4K screen and it's fine.

I purchased an Apple Studio Display and this monitor is better than my old LG 32BN88U-B UltraFine Ergo 31.5". The brightness and color is beautiful. I know about the Apple tax but, no one has this class of monitor at this price point. If you have the money to buy it, get it! Life is short!

Yeah, why small Porsche costs 10 times more than your big and ugly F150?

None of that matters for professional photography editing, graphic design, video? That's laughable. Sharpness? It's an LCD. Sharpness is not an issue.

This is just Apple doing a screwjob on its fans. There are superior monitors for all these professional tasks. The only advantage Apple offers is working easily with their hardware and OS. I used to be a huge Mac fanboy. Now, I laugh as my son struggles to get a downloaded audiobook onto his iPhone, thanks to all the self-serving limits Apple imposes.
