Nintendo itself said the Switch 2 drops by end of March.
Granted, MK9 may not be a launch title, but something will, and that tentpole makes the most sense.
You can always buy GCs from costco.com to save an additional 10 percent.

Digital purchases are tied to accounts. Saves are tied to accounts. The online passes are tied to accounts. 1 Account per person unless they share said account.
The game pass is NES Online. There are two levels, the base and the expansion plus. The base is NES, SNES, and GB games. The base let's you play any game online and gives you cloud saves. The expansion plus adds GBA, Sega Genesis and N64 games, plus gives you access to some DLC like this MK8Dx DLC. The catch is you must have an active NES+ membership, and you must be online (when you launch the game). You don't own the DLC, it is tied to the active membership. (Not that anyone owns any DLC)
Lastly, these memberships are tied to accounts. Saves are tied to accounts, thus progress made in games are tied to accounts. So a single membership only works on one account. For Mario Kart, not too big a deal, just play on the one account. The family pass allows up to 8 people to have access to the membership chosen. They don't have to be tied to one Switch mind you, so it can be split with trusted friends/family to make it much more reasonable.
The online pass also grants you a few bonuses like access to game vouchers (select Nintendo games) 2 for $100 digital, and access to purchase retro controllers to use on the NES Online apps.
