I am one of those louder voices in the other Red Pocket threads who couldn't get the local RP representative to confirm or deny that hotspotting/tethering is included on the 5GB eBay plan... and therefore concluded that it is NOT included.

I have an older 5GB plan on my phone from last Black Friday season. Got it on eBay. Paid $120 at the time. That plan included hotspotting without a datacap... meaning I could use all of my 5GB of data via a hotspot through my phone, and presuably the "unlimited" 2G data that RP includes when your monthly data allowance is exhausted.

I went ahead and bit the bullet a couple of weeks ago and renewed via the $160 eBay sale price (yeah, I'm out $40... oh well). I know from experience that when applying a code to your account, if the code is for the exact same plan that you're already on, the system is supposed to add 360 days to your existing expiration date. If the code is for a different plan, the old plan is terminated and your new plan expires 360 days from that day. Sure, I could wait until "termination day" and apply the code to not worry about it, but I might be busy, and if it's supposed to just add 360 days, why not do it now?

Since I wanted to confirm that the expiration date would extend out into January 2025 rather than early December 2024, I got a CSR with me in chat. He confirmed that my understanding was correct - same plan = +360 days. So when I applied the code and the date came out wrong, the CSR fixed it on the spot. I'm good until late January 2025.

But here's the thing..... the previous plan HAD hotspotting. The new plan probably DOES NOT have hotspotting (otherwise the local RP guy would've quickly confirmed that as a feature). But when I applied the current 5GB eBay code to an existing 5GB eBay RP account - my hotspotting continues to work without a hitch.

Bear in mind - one data point does NOT mean that I've somehow broken the code. But if you have an existing Red Pocket 5GB plan you paid for through RP's eBay store last year, and you buy an identical plan as a renewal.... if you have hotspotting before, there's every reason to believe you'll have hotspotting later too. Just don't change plans....

Caveat emptor, YMMV, all those disclaimers go here.

Dear Red Pocket,

I think it's time for a new marketing team. Whoever designed your marketing and pricing strategy this holiday season should be transitioned to another function…or firm. You lost many long term customers, and now you'll have to fight tooth and nail to replace them with new ones…If it's even possible at all. This was your New Coke moment.

Same. Got tired of waiting for this deal to appear at around Black Friday and thinking that they wouldn't offer it again, moved 3 lines over to US Mobile.

I would have definitely renewed and stayed with RP if they offered earlier.
Awful holiday strategy this year. Raised prices, dropped/limited hotspot, added shipping fee (~$6), delayed "deals" letting the competition get the jump. Just bewildering.

* And also added a 2.5% *admin fee*, too (web) on top of the previous recovery fee ($1/mo,$12/yr)

Does RP have the *renew* option, without buying another SIM card to extend 1 year service?

It does, in the dropdown box.

I did not read every post so hope not repeating. If the promotion or Red Pocket site itself does not say a plan has hotspot, it does not. For $60 more for the annual ($180) I have 10GB then unlimited 4G, no Hotspot.
Then it's unlimited text and phone. In 5 years I have yet to have a problem with the service itself.

Renewing or changing plans can be somewhat tedious unless you let your plan expire. Otherwise what others have said I have also found, you may or may not get the new plan added to yours it may terminate your current plan. However customer service in my case fixed it. One more thing I have been able to renew my plan at the sale price I got it by not letting it end, I renew about a day or so before it ends. Otherwise the lower price may or may not be available when you get a new plan.

Got it. Thanks!

Then, why do people keep buying new SIM cards every year?

It's just strange they still charge you for shipping when buying a renewal code. Such a waste.

Do they? That's dumb because when you renew and ship to your "beach house" you can avoid sales tax. Of course, now they've added shipping fees.

I've been with red pocket for 6 years. I was so scorned by the drying up of black friday deals around the 3~5GB plans that I resolved to find another provider when my current year expires. Even though this deal has finally come around and there's still time for me to use it, I'm still going to move on.
Over the years, I have foregone new customer signup promotions and slightly cheaper plans from other providers because the RP deal would come around so consistently; now that has changed. My number is even a google voice number. so it's even easier for me to hop around, but I didn't.
Every time I talk to a telecom company about raising rates, I remind them that technology usually gets cheaper/better over time. Why do they think they can raise rates without giving me something more in return?

I moved one phone from RP to a US Mobile shared plan, and will move a second phone when its plan expires in a few months. USM has no tax, no $5.55 shipping for renewal, and auto-bills every month so you are not tied up for a year. And USM's Verizon 5G Warp plan has significantly faster data speeds.

RP has a $45 annual plan that was $30 until recently. I use it for a backup and never came close to exceeding its data, text and talk limits. But $45 + $5.55 + tax makes me think I will switch to another provider.

Also, my RP hot spot was basically unusable during a power outage. The one time an outage occurred using my USM Verizon line, the hot spot speed was not slowed.

Agree 100%. RP, are you listening?
Also, really dumb to offers your deals after Xmas when your competition has gotten the jump on you the past month or more.

I moved from RP to Infimobile for 3 lines. Significantly less expensive for me with the 15gb plan on Amazon (~$120 after coupon). Verizon based service is the same if not better.
Does Infimobile include wifi calling?

No, the clock will reset the day you will renew.
If it's same plan, it should extend current date by 360 days. Screenshot the dates before you add code. If it doesn't extend correctly, hit up the customer service chat and they'll fix it.

Been there done that. It will never extend, it will give you one year from the date of redemption, otherwise, you would find people buying the plan only when it's on sale and extending for 2+ years.
If customer service go out of their way to extend the plan (give you whatever is left over + 1 year) then that's the exception.
