For rental property, you need Schedule E. In the past, schedule E was included in the Deluxe version. It didn't offer a lot of guidance, but had prompts for all of the appropriate entries. The Premium version offered more guidance and questions.

HOWEVER, if I look at the list of forms for Deluxe in 2024, it does not include Schedule E! The H&R web page also suggests Premium for rentals. I hate it when a company removes things without making that really clear. I am not sure if Deluxe will be enough for rentals this year.

Will never use H&R software again. Last year they had two bugs in the software that was overtaxing me by hundreds. I ended up having to buy turbo tax and redoing the entire return. Tried getting a refund through their guarantee, but was told I'd have to email my SSN in plain text over email as part of the process, so I stopped there.

Sometimes paying those you dislike an extra $20 hurts more than some other $20 expenditures. $20 extra on tax prep makes me mad. $20 extra on bourbon doesn't seem to bother me at all.

I personally like downloadable software and will reluctantly purchase either HRBlock or TurboTax again. Sometimes I get both to check my entries or I'll will use a free online one to do the double check.

And I'm all for tax authorities being responsible for providing easy and free ways to calculate what I owe them. Or they can calculate it themselves and send me a bill. I have to figure it out, pay for software help, and pay penalties if I get it wrong. That have all the data for the majority of taxpayers as it is all reported to them.

Imagine if your utility bills were handled the same way. You'd have to read you own meter, calculate your bill, and you better get it right or they cut it off. Haha.

Weird defense, but no they don't have all that information sitting out there in plain text. At least I sure hope they don't. There's a huge difference between a tax prep file that sits on my computer and submits securely to the IRS and emailing some random support person over SMTP.

In their defense, snail mail was also an option but wasn't worth my time at that point.

Did I miss the near year-end TurboTax sale on Amazon? Is the current deal of $56 for Deluxe Federal and State or $83 Premier Federal and State as good as it's going to get? If so, this might be the year I finally abandon TurboTax and their ridiculous pricing and move to FreeTaxUSA.

My Fidelity home screen gave advance notice that they will repeat the free TurboTax offer for select clients. Indicates offer will show up sometime in January. One should check if account qualifies before making any purchases.

I'm one of those people and it in fact did not suck. Freetaxusa didn't charge for certain forms, while H&R wanted me to upgrade.
