Do you have a reference for the cost per return? Obviously that will go down as more people use the system. The initial development is the most expensive.

And the IRS data breaches have nothing to do with their new filing software since it happened years before it existed. The IRS has all your data no matter how you file. If anything, their new software was built from the ground up with modern security in mind.

I think all the states they have partnered with so far have some sort of free state e-file system (or no state income tax).

In a ten year period they have cost us 150 billion dollars of people's hard earned money and can not even set up decent computer systems.

I know that government software projects are outrageosly expensive and ineffective. But where are you getting the $1M / per return number? Are you saying that if only a 1,000 people use the software, it'll cost the Federal government a cool BILLION? And if a million people use it, it'll be "just" a TRILLION?

These numbers do not scale at all.

Besides you are taking money from yourself, friends, neighbors and family. They do not do it for "free" The budget requires about $1,000,000 per return they do for "free". Yes that is one million and let that soak in, there is nothing "free" That is money that will be taken from people that work their butts off just to put food on the table and it is almost criminal waste of money. Not a good thing to support or recommend to anybody, as it is costing everybody dearly.

Why not fill your return with one for the real free options offered by multiple companies or spend the $20 for this deal. It will cost you and all of us literally millions less.

Data, because otherwise I'll say it's a trillion per return, as a good government hater!
Let that sink in, and show them the error in their ways by having everybody use it, to drive economies of scale.

Help us all save money by making the govt more efficient.

It may sounds silly, but then it isn't. The real problem is, there may be $5,000 in expenses which you CAN'T easily control (real estate taxes, insurance, utilities etc). So you are forced to control the multiple $5 and $50 expenses elsewhere. $5 is meaningless to most people (I hope). But that's the only type of expense you may have a direct control over.

So the article estimated the cost at up to $250M (note the low end is $64M) for the first year. So $1M per return means only 250 people used it. Doesn't add up.

The issue is sending it via email in plain text. That's not secure, regardless of what they know about you already.
