Wow- the specs on the Made in Japan guitar alone even without the synth features are impressive. Didn't know this thing even existed. Would be an amazing tool for 70's and 80's cover band gigs. Thanks OP!!!

If you don't need the synth features there are quite a few better options at this price point. "Made in Japan" is really the only other standout spec for the money.
I really think you need either high-end pickups, stainless frets, or at least some fancy woods to really compete on specs at $1000.
A Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 2 at full price keeps the same trem, compound radius fretboard, and locking tuners, but it also brings you an ash body, roasted maple neck, Luminlay side dots, and incredibly versatile Fishman Fluence Classic pickups. A Yamaha Revstar Standard at the new price of around $730 brings stainless frets and some very interesting boost and out-of -phase features.

That's big price drop. Probably not selling well?
An FYI: This does not have MIDI out. It's not like attaching a roland Hex pickup to a guitar and being able to play whatever you want or record midi to your daw. The synth engine is built in and is being driven directly by the guitar signal. As a result you don't get the lag but you also don't get the traditional benefit of MIDI guitar.
I can see this as an option for live performances - if you have two guitarists but no keyboard player and you want to play something with a synth, organ, or string part, now you can, just run the second dedicated TRS out to your PA and you're set, nothing else to bring along, plus it should be a decently crafted electric being MIJ.
Darn it, wish this hadn't been posted this calendar yr. My new year's resolution is to stop buying guitars off of SD and master the 11,000 other guitars that you've already seduced me into purchasing. Question: does boss make a pedal that would do the same synth tones?

Yes, Boss makes the SY‑1 or SY‑200 Pedal or if you wanna spend a bunch of money the SY‑300. Jam Origin Midi Guitar VST plugin will also turn any guitar into a midi guitar using your computer too.
