I have been using the Babbel app(lifetime), Babbel live(classes), and comprehensible input for the past year. I have tried to pick up Spanish in the past with duolingo and rosetta stone(I have lifetime) to no avail. I am at an intermediate level in Spanish now with Babbel and input. Babbel the app is good. It is much better than duolingo and rosetta stone. You need to use it in conjunction with some input method like dreaming spanish or refold. Comprehensible input is something that you need to do to get immersion at the same time. Reading in the language is also needed at a certain level.

Babbel did just add AI to their app. It allows you to have short conversations in your target language with the AI for different situations like ordering dinner or getting directions. This is at least true for Spanish. I am unsure about AI exercises in other languages but I assume that they have it or it is in the works. They are constantly adding features to the app so it is worth the lifetime subscription if you are wanting an app. Live is more expensive but you get 2 free classes I think with your lifetime app subscription to try it out. Live classes are actually pretty good. They now offer private classes as well if you subscribe to live.

I have tried the app in airplane mode and it does appear to work offline. Truthfully I use the web version at my computer most of the time.
You can probably get this free from your local library digitally.
I was shown the code LEARN2025 on StackSocial which lowered it another $40 to $89.95

Just curious, with the development of AI like ChatGPT, very likely we'll have very cheap real time translation within a few years. Any reason to spend time learning a second language?

Has anyone tried Babbel for a lifetime subscription? Curious if it's worth it for $138.99—how does it compare to free apps like Duolingo? Thinking about using it for Spanish or French!
I can't comment how this compares to Duolingo since I haven't used Babbel. I can say that Duolingo, while nice, has not made me anywhere near fluent in German after over 2 yrs of almost daily use.

Gamification does a great job driving engagement. I really probably wouldn't have stuck with anything super grueling for 2+ yrs. It is missing a lot of fundamentals and doesn't provide any understanding "why" certain aspects of a different language are the way they are. Understanding the why gives you the ability to apply your knowledge when encountering new situations.

After 2 yrs of Duolingo, I certainly know more than I did before. If you dropped me in Germany right now, I might be able to read many signs, menus, etc. I could probably ask for very basic directions. I might catch some overheard words. But I would not have a prayer of holding a conversation with a native speaker.

Does this work well for teens as a homeschool language program?
If I buy one license, can I install on multiple tablets and/or laptops?

Do you offer a family plan for Babbel courses?
Babbel does not currently offer a family plan. Each family member must have an individual subscription with a separate Babbel account.

Can I share an account with other people?
Although it is technically possible to share an account, it is not recommended. This is because tracking individual progress and vocabulary becomes inaccurate and you will both be following the same learning path.

What if each person is doing a different language? That should work, right?

I have used both Babbel (lifetime) and Duolingo (both paid and free). My personal opinion is that Duolingo is better/easier for beginners learning a new language and is easier to stay engaged, Babbel I find goes into greater depth and better explains why things are the way they are. Both apps have added AI features, but understand that with DuoLingo that is not available on the free version only the paid version (of which there are two levels). I have completed all of the lessons on Duo for the language I am trying to learn. For awhile I had the paid version and once I finished I just use the free version to refresh. Note that I find the ads (for the paid versions and ads from outside of Duo) have gotten much more numerous and distracting from the learning of the language. Its getting to the point where I question if its worth the time. I like using both because there is variation in the vocabulary. If I decide to learn another language I would probably pay for Duo to get rid of the annoying and distracting ads, but I rely more on Babbel because of its depth and explanations. Another thing I like about Babbel vs. Duo is that it gives you a more granular rating (CEFR) of your proficiency.

Hope that helps!

I think that would work, sure. One kid is doing Spanish and one French - then one license might be fine. Note, however, that I'm not sure if you can use the app on 2 phones or 2 laptops at once. It does look like, however, you may be able to install it on one phone and one laptop and then use it at the same time. Either way, it's a solid price from a reputable seller for a lifetime subscription. Think about it, if you use this for your young kids - they could get decades of use (assuming Babbel is still around in decades, ofc).

Why does it say laptop / web browser required but when I click on it the site says web and app based.

Also, is this better than Duolingo free and paid, or Rosetta Stone?

This is a better price than Black Friday, so I'm in for one from Woot.
Stack Social's price is lower, but they specify it's "for new Babbel account users in the US only." Having used Babbel before, I didn't want to risk it. (Plus, the 5% back on an Amazon Visa nearly bridges the price gap.)
I waited a bit for the activation code. It was actually in the "Your order has shipped!" email as a 7-character tracking number, received about three hours after purchase. (Woot does mention this in their Redemption Instructions, but it's easy to miss if you skip reading them closely!)

I just asked ChatGPT and it said there are lots of benefits to learning a new language, not the least of which: delaying the onset of dementia, cultural awareness, and better communication skills.
Learning a new language definitely has its perks, like boosting brain health and connecting with other cultures, but it's not always worth it these days—especially with advanced AI tools making translation so easy. Apps and devices can instantly translate conversations, signs, and even entire documents, so the practical need to learn a second language is much lower than it used to be. If you don't have the time or won't use the language often, the effort might not really pay off. Plus, a lot of the benefits—like staying mentally sharp or gaining cultural insight—can come from other activities, like puzzles, travel, or exploring new hobbies. With AI bridging communication gaps so effortlessly, it might make more sense to focus on skills that tech can't replace.

Just for fun. I'll stop and happy new year everyone!

I had about the same experience with Duolingo. I was committed 5-15min a day. I felt I plateaued after a while and was looking for more explanations and fundamentals.

I am going to try babbel now. Fingers crossed!
