Because they get paid well, the hair stylists are generally pretty decent.

For those who are wondering, they get paid the minimum wage ($15) plus tips so they probably make $30+ an hour
Keep on going until you find a great hair stylist. Then go strictly to that one from then on.

If you are OK with a simple buzz, it's easiest to do it yourself, then ask your wife to help with the back of the neck. It saves time and money.

I do have a somewhat simple clipper cut (#5 guard on top, #2 on sides/back... and no, I'm not brave enough to do it myself) but even I've had one or two instances where I'm not as happy with the results.
I do go to the same location, have for decades, so I know the stylists at at that location pretty well, and most of them are very good. I couldn't get into my regular location once, so I tried going to a different one... walked in, got a bad vibe, and walked right back out and decided to wait to get into the place that I trust.
