Thank you for your concern.

Pihole does not natively support DNS over HTTPS as a direct upstream resolver. Pihole's blocklists are somewhat all-or-nothing and curating the correct list is a manual process. I find the Adguard search interface much quicker to use. They are good at finding blocklists I've never come across. They curate some themselves.

Likewise, to get around the DNS over HTTPS issue, there has to be yet another layer such as ubound or cloudflared running. So, my internal network has to contact pihole, which contacts cloudflared, which goes out my edge gateway, all adding latency, whereas now with Adguard DNS I can do it all on my gateway since it supports DoH natively. I had 3.2 million DNS requests last month from my network. It makes a difference.

In addition with this Adguard setup, I can have different blocklists for different devices.(the gateway can choose) Again, something pihole can't support directly because it runs as a single instance.

The next time you are 'concerned' you can offer suggestions.

Does nobody have Ublock origins? I've yet to watch a YouTube ad since they started putting ads on vids because of ublock

I pay for AdGuard DNS. It's been more granular and consistent than Pihole. I don't use their app. This 'lifetime' version does not include their DNS services outside their free tier.

What do you use since you imply people are 'wild' in a bad way to spend $16.

Nope, it's like the ad doesn't exist and it goes straight to the content.
Thanks, and this is on an IOS (iphone, ipad) device?

Obviously you can use ublock origin on a computer and don't need this (the same for Android if you use firefox browser), but just making sure.

I used to have it on my cellphone, and it did a great job of blocking ads. However, I ended up deleting it because it drained my battery quickly. Although the app's battery usage meter indicated reasonable numbers, my phone's overall battery usage meter showed a high percentage of power consumption. Has anyone else experienced this?

I used AG on Android from 2016 until 2020, or so. Battery life did take a hit but it wasn't too big. I think I'd end the day with an extra 10-15% than when it was on but it blocked ads very well in browsers and in apps.

But now, I use Firefox Mobile and those allow for extensions and it works as well as desktop Firefox.

I use YT Revanced and that handles YT ads.

The only app that irks me with ads and I can not figure out is Reddit's official app. Of course, I only started using that about 2 years ago when it became mandatory as third party apps were blocked. Otherwise, RIF is Fun was my go-to for 10+ years.

I can't justify buying it AG since Android has other options for the apps that I use, but I am debating getting it for iOS for my iPad and sharing with a family member on iPhone for YouTube ads, as I haven't looked in to Revanced-alternatives for iOS.

When it says up to 9 devices, I'm guessing it means a total of 9 devices at any time? Like if I have a 10th device, then I can disable AdGuard from one of the devices and activate in the new one?

Can this block youtube ads
As an FYI, I use NordVPN, and connect to ...Albania.... Couple months, no ads. Can't say it won't cause an issue with ~something, just saying it's working for now, never looked what other countries may work the same. Just a note, I only use it on my spam account, in case they flag it as abuse or something for some reason (Linux operating system with killswitch and autoconnect, they never see my real IP).

Is this better than running pihole? I started running pihole on my NAS just a couple of weeks ago. So, far I'm not too happy. Difficult to find a balance between excessive and too less blocking. My wife keeps on complaining that websites don't open, and then I have to switch it off. I keep telling her to tell me the links and I will whitelist it, but it cumbersome, and she just asks me to turn it off.

If I remove many of the lists, the blocking becomes almost non-existent. I have a feeling that someone needs to be on top of the ad-lists and whitelists for it to work well. It's good enough for personal use, but it becomes a bit unmanageable when there are multiple users in the house and they start to complain.

So, is this any better? If not, no point wasting even $16. Also, 9 devices seems odd. Why not just have a single license for the entire network within the household. With multiple phones and computers and tablets, 9 devices will get used up easily. At least with pihole I turn it on at network level and then don't have to manage individual devices (if I don't want to). Any inputs would be appreciated.

I just use YouTube revanced on my phone. Back in the day ad blockers used to break links for me (especially SD) so I stopped using them and just tolerated them while browsing.

uBlock Origins extension for my Windows desktop computer and laptop here. I recently found out about NextDNS and am using it to block banner ads, etc. on my iOS devices… haven't tested it on Windows yet
