Pihole does not natively support DNS over HTTPS as a direct upstream resolver. Pihole's blocklists are somewhat all-or-nothing and curating the correct list is a manual process. I find the Adguard search interface much quicker to use. They are good at finding blocklists I've never come across. They curate some themselves.


Likewise, to get around the DNS over HTTPS issue, there has to be yet another layer such as ubound or cloudflared running. So, my internal network has to contact pihole, which contacts cloudflared, which goes out my edge gateway, all adding latency, whereas now with Adguard DNS I can do it all on my gateway since it supports DoH natively. I had 3.2 million DNS requests last month from my network. It makes a difference.


In addition with this Adguard setup, I can have different blocklists for different devices.(the gateway can choose) Again, something pihole can't support directly because it runs as a single instance.

Does nobody have Ublock origins? I've yet to watch a YouTube ad since they started putting ads on vids because of ublock

I pay for AdGuard DNS. It's been more granular and consistent than Pihole. I don't use their app. This 'lifetime' version does not include their DNS services outside their free tier.


What do you use since you imply people are 'wild' in a bad way to spend $16.

I use AD on my desktop, but it is pretty much useless on SD. It would not load any link. Also it will not load links from Google sponsored search too. Is that the same for everyone?

Can someone explain. Does this run on your entire home network and block all ads? Or is it just an application. I'm not seeing the value over something that's free such as ublock origin.

It's pretty easy, if you try to license a new device and you don't have any left the app will just tell you, but you just go to an old licensed device's Adguard app and in a couple clicks you can deactivate its license, and as long as the old and new devices are online you can activate the just-deactivated license on the new device. Normally takes less than 20 minutes, maybe even under 10 if you know where you're clicking.
I haven't looked in a while but I think you can also do deactivations through their website but if you have several devices it can be hard to tell which one you're deactivating.

This runs on your device i.e. phone, laptop. uBlock origin ain't runnin' on your iPhone/iPad.

I got this same deal a couple of years ago and it's the best $16 I've spent. Even if it stops tomorrow, I got my money's worth.
Blocks all YouTube ads, website ads, etc.

Lately it's giving me some trouble with Amazon product photos, but you can easily pause it and let that (java?) content load. Regardless, it does a great job, with the occasional glitch.

Yes, it does..you change DNS server IP and adguard will block ads.. native ads will not be blocked though

Does AdGuard apply the DNS to all device traffic on iOS? Would be worth it for mobile games that have ads when I'm away from my home network (where I have a pi-hole)

Websites have caught on and many links I try now know and detect I'm using an ad blocker. It's gotten really bad the last year. So bad if your only reason for buying this is ads on websites for mobile save your money and just use Duck Duck Go or Brave as your browser as both are far better than this. I bought the lifetime like this deal a few years ago so this is from experience. YMMV as web sites vary. It also won't work with the Slickdeals app as links won't open.
