Back in the days, seats were assigned with no extra this or that until taxpayers bailed out the airlines after 9/11. The industry's insatiable appetite with greed has no ceiling. .

What I wouldn't give to have a body and brain that would cooperate with whatever random seat I was assigned for two 10+ hour flights.

JAL economy is excellent, that leg of the trip would be comfortable.

Been there, done that, several times. How do you think I know it doesn't work for me?

Excellent compared to some other airlines, yes.

Excellent for me? Unfortunately, no. I get extremely uncomfortable on flights that are even a couple hours long. Trans-oceanic travel has become torturous for me as I've gotten older and my body has gotten less cooperative.

This is also me, and my ass starts hurting 2 hours in cause the seats feel like wood wrapped with bubble wrap to me.

I've done a transatlantic no seat assignment flight, it's not a big deal, just pack a Xanax, purple seat cushion and a duty free bottle of vodka that makes it on the plane but not off an you'll be fine \m/

I picked JAL, it was $100 more but I got to pick my seat, gives your more leg room than others, only 8 seats across vs 9 on others, and they are very highly rated.

Back in the day, 2 check-in bags (each bag up to 50 pounds) were also included in the airplane tickets from the US to Japan, and there was no additional fee for bringing 1 carey-on bag inside the airplane. Those were good days...
