Ouch.

Look, just because a game is only played by people under 25 and over 65 doesn't mean it isn't a real sport Smilie

Also looking to get started now that my city has turned every single open space into a pickleball court. At least when the fad dies, I'm only out $50-$100 and not millions of taxpayer dollars...I say that only half-jokingly as a former daily racquetball player.
Yeah whatever happened to racquetball? That's all I ever heard about in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Did it get replaced by pickleball?

You can get T700 carbon fiber paddles from AliExpress for $30 a pop. Probably all made from the same factories as the big names.

That late? I was struggling to find courts in the early 2000s. It was huge in the 80s, slowed a bit in the 90s (when I played, our university had a 10-court indoor complex that required reservations). Today in a much bigger city I can think of 3 courts total...2 in churches and one in the rec center, and they all smell like mothballs.

A lot more labor intensive than converting tennis courts to pickleball, which is what's happening now. Sometimes they're multi purpose for 2-3 sports at once.

The best racquetball court conversions are climbing walls...I can get behind that 100%. But too much liability for gyms or cities.

Start with fiberglass paddles. Pretty inexpensive for a set and lighter than wooden paddles.
Agree. And, if you missed out note Franklin $10 set from a few weeks ago you can still pick them up for $20 on eBay - still a great deal

I gotta say, I've never seen anyone under what appears to be the age of 50 playing, at least when and where I play.

while reading reviews, there seems to be a surprising number of photos of broken paddle handles.

These are heavy as hell and completely made of wood. Maybe buy these for children but these will last about one game before you realize you need to buy a real pickleball paddle.

Selkirk makes a relatively cheap two pack and Friday paddle is always selling a combo deal
Buy heavy all wood paddles for children?

I play pickleball regularly. These paddles from a brand called "Sport Beats" on Amazon are the best value for a carbon fiber paddle at the moment. $50-51 for 2. Get the "Deft" model.

I bought this and I went from a 3.0 to a 4.25 within a month.
I went from 5.5 to 2.0 when I bought this because no one over 2.0 would play with me

These will be pretty discouraging for children and probably even not safe due to the weight. The significantly higher swing weight of wooden paddles can put a lot of strain on the wrist, and maybe worse for children without enough strength.

Skip these wooden ones all together. In fact, don't even get them if they were passing them out for free. They'll just discourage you from the game because they're that bad. Get a set of fiberglass ones for about $15-$20 on Amazon, or go straight to AliExpress and get a starter set of carbon paddles for around $20
I dunno when pickleball got so bougie, but I grew up playing it in PE with wooden paddles and no one got hurt, wrist strain, or future arthritis in our 40s. But now I'm wondering if I get these fancy lightweight materials if I'll look like a beast getting back into the sport, like when Rock Lee dropped his weights.

? How so? these are just cheap sets, in the past six months a facility just opened 16bindoor courts and another added 3 more to their courts which brings that facility to 12bindoor and 10 outdoor... Another facility just opened with 8.... More being built in parks...
