Second this. One key gripe with the 7420 platform is the move to non-upgradeable memory and integral Wi-Fi module (Wi-Fi 6 via the AX201). See details here [notebookcheck.net].

The other complaint I have about this design is the carbon fiber lid, which doesn't seem to resist wear as well as the more traditional lids. Purely a cosmetic problem, but don't be surprised if a model you receive is functional but has more scuffs on the lid than you might expect for Grade A.

Good laptop, memory is non upgradable so get 16GB or 32GB versions. I purchased 3 similar refurb. Dell laptops over the last year or so and no issues so far.

Dell Latitude 7-series is a bit better.

Two Latitude 5-series laptops that we bought had system board failures in 1 & 10 months after the 90-day warranty expired with FedEx Recycling ("Dell Refurbished")... est. $600 total loss. It was well documented on Reddit and Dell Communities by I.T. managers who purchased hundreds of these units.

Investigate any potential model purchase thoroughly on Reddit, Dell Support Communities, etc. Take the responses from I.T. managers very seriously as they support thousands of Latitudes over many years. Dell Business Leasing ships these in very large quantities to government and business employees for 2-3 year leases.

Do consider that for the 11th generation G-series mobile CPUs that the difference in performance between the i5- and i7-branded models was infamously small (see a review here [hardwarecanucks.com] or side-by-side benchmarks here [userbenchmark.com]). The non-H 11th generation mobile series all prioritized efficiency to a point that started diminishing the i5 vs. i7 positioning.

Is the wifi module soldered to the board? The AX201 is otherwise upgradeable just get a newer discrete module.

Only two of the 1080p panels for the clamshell (aka traditional or non-2-in-1) are rated for touch.

Of those two, you can safely bet that you won't get the SafeScreen model (a privacy filter).

Reminded me of the period when my company did go wild with laptop privacy filters as part of their cybersecurity effort.

Stay away from the 5-series laptops. They were a 'value' model. Basically the Kia of Dells Latitude portfolio. The specs look ok, but corners cut with cheaper materials, bad design, and poor build quality.

Everything about Dell Outlet's operations is strongly connected with Dell (https://www.dell.com/en-us/dfh/lp/outlet).
Dell Refurbished... separated. Everything is run in a small independent building with a small group... unless something has changed.

No change. FedEx remains the largest lessor operating through Dell Refurbished. However, if you search through other Dell Refurbished threads you'll find that plenty of other IT departments have been the source of Dell Refurbished items (such as local city governments, etc.). The way to think about Dell Refurbished is essentially a drop shipping service for off-lease Dell equipment self-certified by the lessor.

And it should come as no surprise that the Dell Refurbished purchases from some of those smaller lessors (like some random city government) were often plagued with more problems (such as still being security locked making a fresh install of Windows more difficult).

You were spot-on earlier about Dell Outlet - which is indeed directly operated by Dell - being totally distinct from Dell Refurbished. Dell outlet involves a purchase made directly with Dell. Dell Refurbished involves a drop-shipment from a Dell lessor with Dell Refurbished operating as the intermediary.

Thanks, OP. I ordered an i5 / 16 gb / 4k display. Received it yesterday, its mint.
A fresh install of windows 11 and I discovered the computer has a digital license for win 11 pro -- so don't be put off by "no os".
I had trouble changing storage mode from "Raid On" (the default) to ACHI (which I needed to dual boot linux). No matter what I did, this setting would revert to default. I stumbled across a tip, to perform an RTC reset. This essentially wipes all bios settings. After doing this, I was able to change the storage setting and get it to work. If you're having weird bios issues, this may help you.
