This isn't a beacon. Not a lawyer but you control it with hand motions.

I don't care about arguing on the Internet, just if anybody is looking to buy a drone, you don't need a phone to use it. This wasn't clear to me when I bought it and it's a huge plus.

We unload the mountain bikes, turn on the drone and go.

Obviously not where prohibited or around emergency responders.

How well does the follow me work with MTB? Have you had any crashes? Any issues with other riders? How does it know to follow you?
it's just image analysis, if you go behind a big tree or in front of another rider, it can 100% lose you. It's surprisingly good though, it does a better job than I was expecting for $200.

It's never crashed, if it loses you, it just hovers and waits. If you don't go back in front of the camera I assume eventually it would land, but it's very controlled. We don't use it with low branches, that would obviously cause it to crash.

I bought the insurance, so I would use it on a boat, we did once.

I don't understand the comparisons to the flip, it's literally half the price. It's pretty rare in tech to not get a much better project for 2x the cost of something.

I will say using the phone app to control it is AWFUL. I would return this thing if that were the primary method of controlling it. If that's the "legal" way, that's a hilarious joke. Your phone has to connect to the Neo's access point, and modern phones hate connecting to access points that don't actually provide internet access. So if you turn off the screen and put the phone in your pocket for a minute, there's a great chance you've lost connection when you try to use the app again. If I used this a lot and wanted to manually control it instead of using the presets, I would get a controller.

I would just wait and see what the upcoming DJI Flip has to offer later this week even though it will be more expensive.
Agreed. This is definitely a step above the cookie cutter cheap drones but just barely. Take that next step to the flip so you don't grow out of this in 2 months.

Any thoughts if this would be a good grab to film my boat fishing trips? Just want something that can hoover over and catch some videos when we are fishing
I believe DJI warns it's not to be used over water. And there are plenty of comments and YT videos of people proving that warning ti be warranted.

Ignorance of the law and how to apply. It only counts if you're a police officer and have qualified immunity. I assume you're not. The government will spank you left and right just because they can and saying I didn't know is not an excuse
"Saying I didn't know is not an excuse"

Words that will soon start haunting "the government" when they're stripped of qualified immunity for the crimes they've either perpetrated or aided and abetted. ;-)

I want to get this for my nephews. What will be the prohibitive factors to consider? I think it's a deal breaker if they have to take a training course or get certification. That said, they will have parental supervision and guidance.

how old is your nephews?
they may be better off with this:

Specta Mini GPS Drone with 4K UHD Camera, Under 249g, 3 Aixs Gimbal Drone
https://www.amazon.com/Specta-Tra...9idGY&th=1

its made by the same people from DJI and look like the mini 4k at $219 now.
it comes with the drone and the RC controller. and longer battery life.

with the Neo you have to get the controller separately. (flying with the smartphone app sucks from what I read and it is a frustrating expereince)

the Spectra/Mini4 is under 250gram so no registeration or course or certification neeed. but there is no propeller guard so be careful when flying if it's a younger child make sure you are outdoors with plenty of space to fly. some quick pointers
- don't fly above 400 ft
- don't fly over people
- until you are famliar with the controls and handling just stay away from buildings and trees.
- watch this 15 minute video for a newbie. helped me alot

I don't see what this is giving you over the 199 base price. A case that you can pick up on Amazon for $10? Realistically with this thing you want to get the three batteries for flight time. Also note that the controller free thing is sort of a misnomer. In the US you still have to have your phone connected to it. Fly legally even in automated modes. Not saying that's enforced or anybody will do anything about it if you don't. If you find that you do enjoy using it as a drone with your phone, you'll probably want to pick up a controller too
I find that this really isn't that great of a drone, but one reason nothing will be enforced against it is that it looks like a kids toy and just doesn't give the usual anti-drone vibe.

Its very small and very durable, but otherwise kind of sucks.

I returned mine after a few weeks. Video quality looks like upscaled 720p. Forget about recording in anything but perfect bright light as well. It's a toy and if you have no expectations for video or photo then it's barely ok. Other huge issue is you cannot adjust the saturations/noise/sharpness etc via the app. So you have to buy the remote. But if you don't use the remote then the NEO forgets your settings. I'd buy it at $99. maybe.
thanks... saved me $$

Apologies if this has been asked.
I do not own a drone and I would consider myself a complete novice at operating one. My concern is buying something from DJI only to have the U.S. government kill it based on some of the legislation I have read here and there.

What's the risk of buying a DJI today only to have it killed by regulation?

Especially the phone app, like if they actually get TikTok banned. That would be a larger problem for the average user.

Very little chance the government will ban the Neo drone or the Fly app; risk is tiny.
