If you want to remove axle nuts, go for 1/2" drive sockets.
I also sat and watched a rookie mechanic at my local shop get his ass chewed out for using a filter socket (that broke) as he was trying to remove an axle.
It all boils down to "can you?" vs "should you?"

It all boils down to "can you?" vs "should you?"
I was just looking at an 18" Capri breaker bar in 3/8" size (which is a lot of leverage for a 3/8"), but the breaker bar was only rated for around 180 ft lbs. So, while an 18 inch 3/8" breaker bar should give you more than enough leverage, most 3/8" breaker bars probably aren't rated over 200 ft lbs. As such, while these sockets are big enough and (should be) strong enough for hub work, the 3/8" input size is the biggest limiting factor.

A low-profile 3/8" socket lets you apply the torque with less side twisting, or so I think.
Other than the filters, I'm not sure where else I would use them. The only large hardware on a passenger car besides an axle nut is an adjuster bolt on some of the steering racks.
