It's a polarizing movie. I own the 4K. If you haven't seen it yet and are letting reviews tell you what to watch, I'd recommend just streaming it if you can or checking your library.

I think at the time, the fact that it cost so much and did so poorly was a part of it. Not a great movie, but not terrible either. It kinda felt like Costner was riding that wave of popularity from Dances with Wolves and just thought he could do anything he wanted. I liked it.
