It's a polarizing movie. I own the 4K. If you haven't seen it yet and are letting reviews tell you what to watch, I'd recommend just streaming it if you can or checking your library.
I think at the time, the fact that it cost so much and did so poorly was a part of it. Not a great movie, but not terrible either. It kinda felt like Costner was riding that wave of popularity from Dances with Wolves and just thought he could do anything he wanted. I liked it.
Edit: The Postman was kind of the same outcome, too.

Our family absolutely loves it, but it really was controversial. I've never really understood why.

It's not the worst movie ever as people thought when it came but also is not great and kind of boring. Like is you wanna remember that era is ok. I re watched not that long ago and was ok.
I believe the extended cut was released on TV... where they then dubbed over the swearing along with other censoring. The theatrical cut is what's normally found. I think I read the Arrow Video combines the two but is hard to come by.
