I used to buy these at around $1 per pack, so this is a pretty good deal. You get 11g of protein per pack and it's only soybeans, a bit of oil, and some spices, no other crap added like so many other protein snacks. They're very crunchy and DRY in a way that makes you want to drink while eating them, if that makes sense.

They are both soybeans, it is just the harvest time. Edamame is harvested when green. Soy beans are harvested when ripe/yellow. Different texture, different nutritional profile. I'm not sure that it is a trick, edamame has been sold for a long time, and there isn't a lot of overlap in terms of the food products of the two.

The answer is simple. No American company is interested in making them. In contrast, the Chinese have a long culinary history with soy. Soy sauce is to China as tomato sauce is for Italy. They also have a huge soy food industry, fueled by Chinese consumer demand. That means soy foods are mainstream and cheap (even when they import their soybeans from America!). In America, soy products are considered niche and appeal mostly to vegetarians and health fanatics. That makes soy products expensive. When was the last time most Americans have eaten tofu? In contrast, many of my Chinese friends eat it weekly.

Soy foods are cheap in China so entrepreneurs rather import the finished products than start a whole new mini-industry here. Since edamame is not a popular American snack, why invest in a whole new industry for so few customers? It's simply much cheaper to import these.

I bought a box of these before and it tasted like crap. Not sure if I got bad a bad apple(s) but yeah it was awful.

That's very interesting but that's not the answer. In reality, China doesn't grow a lot of soybeans, concentrating instead on grains. It is, however, the biggest consumer and importer of soybeans, and most of it comes from the US and Brazil. In fact, 59% of US soybeans went to China.

This is why American farmers suffered when Trump put in his tariffs. In fact, experts say we lost the tariff war because the US had to reimburse the farmers for losses. And they will again, if Trump puts in new tariffs. China is already threatening to buy more soybeans from Brazil and American soybean farmers are panicking. And if you think that were talking about a small industry, you're wrong. In 2023, we exported $15.06 BILLION of soybeans to China. That's more than ALL the agricultural products exported to the European Union.

The actual answer to the question is that these are manufactured in China because China has a large soybean industry. They eat and make more soy foods than any other country. They have the interest, technology and infrastructure. Soy is a major component of Chinese cuisine. In this case, they actually buy the soybeans from America. They then cook, process and package them to be resold back to us. The identical edamame is sold under other brands in other countries.

These are GREAT, especially if you are looking for a lower carb snack like my T1D makes me do.
BUT...these are not safe for the uh...dry mouth munchies. You will want plenty of water when consuming these as they act like saltines in your mouth and dry it up pretty good.
