Just want to add that you can file for free using Cash App. No income limits like other free file options. The only requirement is no complicated returns (no multi-state work/live, must have lived in same state the whole year), but pretty good if all you have are W2's, self-employment income, and 1099's.
I've used Cash app (formerly CreditKarma) for years and it works totally fine, even with semi-complicated taxes.

I used deluxe with a home based business and also buying & selling stock.
TT Deluxe may tell you while entering info you should upgrade to Premier. Just ignore and proceed with Deluxe
Go to know! I fell for their tricks years ago when I bought crypto. I get I'll try deluxe this year.

Once the key is activated, it is tied to a single Intuit account. So, you can only share if you're willing to share your Intuit account. Annoying, but I suppose it aligns with the idea that you're only supposed to be sharing within your household (i.e. people you trust). Since returns are not stored in your Intuit account, other users can't see them. At least that's what Intuit says.

Oh crap, thanks for correcting me! If the person ever used the online version, their taxes could be viewed by anyone else sharing the Intuit account. I used the online version for a few years and my old taxes are still available to be accessed in my account.

Yikes! I didn't even think of that situation!
You can password protect individual returns. Save As or Save with password(?), I do that anyway just for safe backup. Even if you were only sharing with family members you'd probably want to anyway. I usually wait until I've finished filing but if you're sharing your account just do it initially.

Can it also handle the options trading deductions as well?
It will handle anything that goes in your 1099-B, which includes options trades.

And that applies to the online version too? I know the desktop does it, but those are your locally stored ones. The above scenario is in regard to people that have used the online version in the past and have those returns in the cloud.

Yeah, I was replying in regards to the shared intuit account/key not cloud accounts. Wouldn't use cloud version for that reason among others. No reason to put any more personal data out there.

Can anyone shed light on how freetaxusa, cash.app, etc. are free to use? How do they make money? I assume they are selling taxpayers sensitive tax information. I want to look into these but obviously am hesitant.
FreeTaxUSA is very upfront about it: "If it's free, how do you make money?
We make money from our state tax return and other optional services. You receive excellent value for every dollar spent." The other optional things audit defense, deluxe support, pro support, amended returns, printed copies, etc. But I think state returns are probably the bulk.OLT.com is similar.

Cash App used to be Credit Karma Taxes, which made money with credit card and other offers that were likely highly targeted since they knew a lot about you from your tax return. This was sold to Cash App when Intuit bought Credit Karma and the business model is less clear. They force you to download their app and offer an option to get your refund early if you put it in your cash app account. I wouldn't be surprised if you also get offers from them as well.

Unless you're sharing the same personal computer, the local file stays local, so it's a non-issue. The other discussion was in regard to people that had already used online versions in the past. I guess you could ask Intuit to delete your old cloud returns.

In my experience, buying through app isn't cheap. Extra state is listed on website as $45. E file is $25, id suggest mailing them instead. So it is probably cheaper for you to buy 2 of these and enjoy the $10 credit toward the e file if you do it that way. You'll probably have to use 2 accounts. Frankly, I don't know if that would work with existing tax file? Maybe do all federal, save a copy, file state 1. Open second copy of TT, do state 2? E file both for $15 each? I imagine it would work, but YMMV.

Edit: you might check the state website to see if they offer filing that way too.

Does one of these cover the Self-Employed version? I have to file for both W2 and 1099.
