This thing is a million times better than those usb thumb drives or microsd cards.
They are actually also very small and easy to carry around, I have a few of them and love them.
I've pretty much abandoned all my usb sticks, no matter how high end they are, they cannot even touch the perormance and reliability of a real ssd like this one.

I ordered the X9 Pro and while it's physically smaller than the Samsung T7, I think I prefer the full metal body of the Samsung, it just feels better built. And the pricing and performance are similar between the two. Also the Samsung includes a USBA and USBC cable, whereas this only includes an even shorter USBC.

I didn't know anyone tried to compare a thumb drive or SD card to an SSD. That's like comparing my Camry to a 911 and saying "the Camry cannot touch the performance of a real sports car."

Is this a good deal? I need about 90-100 gb to backup photos and docs. This may be overkill though.

Just use free image backup from Google Drive, or pay the I think $20/year for 100GB of storage which is much safer being they will have backups of your backups and then backups of those, so the odds of losing anything is near zero, whereas using your own storage has an exponentially higher failure chance.

Can this be used to run games off of it on a laptop? Or would it be too slow?

Samsung Pro Ultimate (pretty fast for an SD card) writes at 200 MB/s
The X9 Pro (here) writes at > 1000 MB/s (the X10 version someone mentioned it twice that fast).
That's nominal speed, not actual speed. Also depends on number and size of files. Another big if is the type of usb port you have.

this deal seems good, but what are your thoughts on the # of recent (a bunch since November) amazon reviews citing drive failure/corruption? I've never owned one of these

Does an android phone (high end) have enough power to run one of these kinda like connecting a usb c flash drive?
I've used other SSDs with my S23 Ultra without an issue. A few notes, though:
1) The native camera doesn't have an option for recording to an SSD or anywhere but the Gallery (as of now, at least). There are a couple of apps that allow you to save video to an external SSD, I'm using the Black Magic camera. For normal file system use, non-camera, it works fine and shows up in any file management app.
2) With the SSD plugged in, you can't charge or plug in an external mic. One way around this is a mini-USB hub, I have the Smallrig and it works well. You can also look at USB hubs combined with a NVME SSD which eliminates the need for a dedicated SSD like this one.

Oh, nothing can beat Newegg's TikTok shop deals, they were selling SSDs for cheap, i remember snagging a 4TB Samsung T7 for $125, those were the days.

Any good for portable for Xbox X Series or PS 5 to actually run games off of and not just storage??
I had the same question and found this in the Amazon reviews - yes for XBox, no for PS5 - "purchased this for my Xbox series x console. This only came with a USB c to USB c cable. Docking one star for not having versatility of being USB A compatible without purchasing an extra cable separately but otherwise this would have been perfect."

Ordered my T9 from Samsung website on Dec 28 and yet to receive it. Says ill get it in 8 days which is a month from then. Still keeping the Samsung, but got this one as well from Amazon and ill have it in 4 days. Was gonna buy it at BB, but had points totaling $15 from Amazon so a no brainer. Thanks OP!

This is a really good callout. There does seem to be (anecdotally) a jump in negative reviews since Fall of last year with a common theme around drive failure. I personally use Samsung T7's today for video editing (they strike the best blend between speed and reliability), and while no drive or manufacturer is perfect, I'm now torn about whether to grab an X9 Pro or not.

Sandisk 2tb is $120 in store at Costco (I bought one yesterday). Same speeds, plus it's Costco if you have problems.
