These are not shitty shingle SMR drives. SMR write speed is less than 80 MB/s. People are reporting 200 MB/s for these seagate drives.

I bought two last time this was on sale and shucked them into my nas. I ran a stress test and secure wiped them followed by a extended smart test, both ran it fine without issues. Temps were good for me, lower than my wd reds

That's literally EVERY thread on SD. Most of the content is just two factions trying to prove the other is wrong. If you don't believe me, head on over to the recent lululemon jogger thread, same thing, different product.

Anyway, that's why using a strong sense of filtration and due diligence helps with these comments. Once in a while you get a good nugget of info/wisdom which makes it worth the effort if you actually need said item.

Why is it whenever a Seagate deal is posted there's basically two types of comments? That the drives are fine with good temps, speeds, and reliability and that Seagate is the literal devil and will sell you a brick (not a bricked drivean actual brick) and then burn your house down when you try to ask for a new one.
of course. nobody. including western digital will replace you with a "new one". its their warranty practice and they have gotten away for too long. they will replace your brand new retail hard drive with a used (refurbished) hard drive.

so yes
expect them to burn your house down if you ask for a "new" replacement.

Prefer Western digital for reliability. Seagate use to be the gold standard decades ago.

Really? Because if they didn't have a good reputation, or had abnormally high failure rates, then they would go out of business.

Seagate relies upon enterprise sales... not SDers and general consumers looking for external hard drives at Amazon/BB/Costco/etc.
are you telling us they are still in business because they still got a good reputation?

i dont mind selling you my seagate hard drives brand new inbox for 80% of what wd is selling. are you taking? i cant wait to get rid of them. even at half price.

Somehow I doubt you have sealed 24, 26, 28 or even the 30/32 Exos drives otherwise you wouldn't be complaining on here.

I'm guessing you mean you have external hard drives that are likely second-tier drives that WD and Seagate pushes out to at least recoup some money.

Does nobody remember when WD decided to throw SMR drives into their red's?

Yes. WD has been secretive about using SMR drives. At least Seagate is open about it. I like seagate hard drives. Seagate Exos is the best of the best.

The story keeps shifting with this user... but we're to believe Seagate is junk b/c he's unable to move inventory at even 50% off.

The reality is, he has a lot of clearanced stuff likely bout on SDs over the years. The funny thing is that spinning hard drives don't last forever. The motors do seize from lack of use b/c the lubrication and stuff just dries out and gets old similar to CPU thermal paste. Then, when the "NIB" Seagate rusty spinner fails to startup, it'll only further reinforce this dudes opinion of Seagate.

That's cute. Christmas stocking stuffers? Do they have a bow on them? Wink

I seriously don't think anything under 10TB is even worth the electricity to power up, and 10TB is pretty iffy IMO. With the exception 5TB Black drives (portable), I'll be cleaning house soon on these "small" drives, which I think of as clutter, and even 12TB drives will soon be added to that list.

I thought 18TB was my bottom line but now it's quickly moving to 20-22TB.

or facts.

fun facts. those so called enterprises went with some seagates because they got their cut with them and to secure their jobs.

if there is nothing wrong with their storage fleets. their job and position will get cut. so why not taking the cut with seagate and keep their tasks "busy" and relevant during their lifetime there.

It's simply amazing to see people still talk about seagate issues when the drives that had issues over a decade ago when 3tb was the new hot size. Seagate is perfectly fine weirdos.

More factors involved.

I think it was Backblaze, the online backup provider, that said in a blog post that while other disk providers like Hitachi, etc had lower rates of failure (reference their quarter drive failure report posts), they were not able to get the numbers of drives they wanted consistently to keep expanding their clusters.

So this is a case where Seagate wins most of their business despite worse reliability.
