Perhaps. But that's a lot of work to discern. This is a great deal for us lazier audiophiles.
Why buy this if you are using wireless speakers? This is an integrated amp.
I build audio components including amps / receivers. There is nothing really special or different about this unit compared to a 'quality' integrated receiver.

Someone mentioned toroidal power supply. I could not determine if it does or not. If it does, thats great.

It's definitely more money in Yamaha's pocket. Lots of licenses costs are avoided on this unit.

At the end of the day it's most likely a quality unit. Hard to tell without actual measurements. The audio reproduction world is the progenitor of unverified unqualified hype. People 'hear' whatever they want to hear.

It's your money. If you like it , get it but it's not necessarily an upgrade over a quality integrated from Denon, Yamaha, and so many others.

And it's only a 'deal' compared to its msrp and post covid markups. My unsubstantiated opinion is that it's not selling well and will continue to be discounted until it's liquidated.

Just FYI. OP here, I still maintain you'll get a better setup going with a vintage amp and a Dac…. My 2c.

That's a really great question. It got me thinking a little too. Receivers are made to do everything pretty well. Movies, music, FM tuner whatever. So the components used tend to be a little lower quality to keep price lower and don't produce the best fidelity. This receivers main purpose is 2 channels stereo designed specifically only for that. Since most music is recorded in stereo, this will do a much better job of reproduction. Also the components used are specifically selected for their quality, lesser cost cutting. The signal path for a surround sound vs stereo is also longer.

Again, there are definitely receivers which could keep up with this on fidelity but you'd be looking at spending maybe $1500 to get the same kind of sound quality from a surround receiver.

This receiver is well worth it for the package of things you get and the flat sound and power Yamaha usually delivers. I've started doing separates for my Dac, streamer and Phono amp but would be tempted if I needed an all in one.

Dedicated 2 channel higher end integrated amplifiers usually have toroidal transformers, larger, cast (vs aluminum foil) heat sinks, and massive, higher end main capacitors for better transient control. Especially with the low end. Add an excellent DAC, and the parts start adding up.

Not seeing anything about zones but same music shouldn't be an issue.

From the manual:
If the speakers are connected with bi-wiring, select A+B.
