It takes some configuring, but I've had good experiences with using Google Family to manage my kids devices.
1. Go to the web to find the current minutes, messages, data, and days remaining on your permanent phone.
2. Activate your "donor" phone on the same account.
3. Go to the web to find the current minutes, messages, data, and days remaining on your new, donor phone.
4. Go to support.tracfone.com and scroll down to and click "Chat with Support".
5. Populate the message template below with details of your donor phone and permanent phone and share with the CSR.
Hello, I'd like to move the data, minutes, text, and remaining days FROM my line TO my line .

An 8 year old shouldn't have more than a feature phone.

If you have existing service on a existing phone and want to add the 2 years of service, how do you do that ? I dont want to active the new phones and want to give them to family members at some point. Thanks in advance.

So for those who are thinking of leaving these phones unactivated, it doesn't hurt to take a gamble to activate them. After 60 days you'll end up with 2 unlocked, albeit pretty slow, phones, and potentially 2x 7.5k worth of Tracfone Rewards points, which are redeemable for eGift cards (hopefully post 2/1).
