Does the 4th generation Tablo support ATSC 3.0 (aka NextGenTV)?
No. The tuners in the 4th generation Tablo support the ATSC 1.0 broadcast standard used by all major commercial broadcasts today and the Tablo device takes full advantage of it like never before. While ATSC 3.0 broadcasts are available in some markets, ATSC 1.0 broadcasts will continue through at least June 2027.
Homerun has an open interface which makes it compatible with other services/software such as Plex or Channels DVR. Both cost a monthly fee for DVR/guide features, I believe around $8. Plex also has the option of a lifetime pass. In any event both of these solutions require an always-on PC or NAS in addition to the HDHomerun device. That said, HDHomerun's interface is much faster than Tablo's.
It's possible, although not likely at this point in time. ATSC 3.0 still has issues with DRM (HDHomerun 4K devices can't decode all ATSC 3.0 stations in every market). Many markets, including Los Angeles and San Diego, don't have all networks in ATSC 3.0 yet (L.A. is missing ABC7, San Diego only has Fox5 and KUSI). Then there's the issue of compatible devices on the consumer's end - many TVs have built-in ATSC 1.0 tuners that are not capable of ATSC 3.0. Unless/until those issues of broadcasting and end-user hardware are not fully hashed out, it would appear that 2027 is not a hard deadline.

Apparently it's going to end support for a standard in 2027?

IMHO, 4 Tuner version for $40 more is the way to go.

I have a 5TB usb3 drive connected to mine.
For most people, 2 tuners will be enough since it's for OTA channels only. So basically there is NBC, ABC, FOX, and CBS. So you'd have to watch a lot of local channel shows at once to need 4 tuners at once. Not that there's anything wrong with that if you do! But for most people, 2 tuners will be enough.

This is a good price for the tablo 4th gen. Note that buyer pays return shipping if you decide to return it. Reviews on amazon are poor, but most people who I've talked to that have it seem to like it. I figure a lot of the frustration from reviewers on amazon are probably do to user-error or not understanding how to set it up/use it properly.

I have an HDhomerun at the moment, but I don't like that it's $120-$200 and then they want you to pay a subscription to use DVR functionality on top of that. I do like that it's much more compatible with other hardware/software, though. Also HDhomerun can be viewed on devices outside of the household. But I still think I'm going to get the Tablo and return my HDhomerun. Could regret it, but the price of the HDhomerun never changes, so if I decide I want to go back to HDhomerun, I can just get another one for the same price for $120. I just think it's really convenient to have an all-in-one solution OTA DVR for a one time payment of $50, as long as the interface is not too bad, slow or buggy.

Wish it was compatible with Plex. have a hdhomerun, but wanted to run a 2nd directional antenna to get a few more channels since I'm kinda far from the metro area.

Have they fixed the app? I owned a tablo for about a week early last year but ended up returning it due to the buggy app.

I had a decent experience with Tablo about 5 years ago. Back then they charged $100-150 for the device, plus $5/mo for guide data. The guide data was almost a must if you wanted to use DVR...if you didn't pay the $5/mo you wouldn't be able to record shows by title, or set up series recordings, etc.

It seems like the unit has dropped in price significantly this generation, and they've eliminated the subscription entirely. So my question is...where's the monetization? Selling user data? Ads in guide? There must be a catch.

No commercial skipping options with Tablo, either.
I use Sparkle TV and can record or timeshift my HdHomeRun tuner easily. Sparkle TV works on most non iOS devices. Small fee for advanced options.

I have been using the 2 tuner model for a couple of months now and while it is not perfect, it was the best option I found for an OTA DVR. I joked with my wife that it had the worst Amazon ratings of any product I have ever bought....but I wanted to try it anyway and I am glad I did. For $50 I am in for this deal to have a backup.

Streaming from the Bolt to my phone/tablet is super slow and unreliable, not to mention it leaves a recording on the device I feel compelled to clean up manually, so... I'll give this a try. Smilie

Still looking into this, but on first glance, the openess of HDhomerun makes higher price worth while compared to Tablo. I hate being stuck with an OEM's app.

For Amazon Fire TV with Amazon Recast owners:

Using 4th gen Tablo and 1st gen Fire TV Cube, the integration with Fire TV is not as slick as the Recast but functionally it works well. With Amazon continually lowering/degrading Recast integration this may change. I had to return the latest generation Fire TV Cube due to incompatibility with the Recast. In all fairness, Amazon discontinued the Recast a few years back so time and technology marches on.

The reception and resolution much is better using the Tablo and it uses 5 GHz WiFi whereas Recast uses 2.4.

Bottom line, I'm still mainly using the Recast today due to it's integration with Fire TV, not performance.

Silly question. This device requires the connection of an over air antenna that I need to already have or provide and the stations I already had is what I will get with this. It's just to DVR over air to other TVs on my network.

Is this true: No ASTC 3.0 = no 4K OTA? Seems like large screen tv owners would be disappointed.
