Not 6pt, pass. Very limited usage if you don't want to damage the hex bolts.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank jeff34270

12-point sockets are fine unless you are working on previously damaged or stripped nuts and bolts. They can be used on 6 and 12-point hardware (even square in a pinch) and are easier to get on and reposition than 6-point sockets, especially when used with breaker bars.

Youtuber AvE showed that you'll snap the bolt itself before rounding the corners off of a good bolt head and TTC had to use soft pre-rounded nuts in order to show that 12-points will slip before 6-points.

I've damaged bolt heads before with 12 point but it's usually because the socket was in an odd position and not fully seated or on a rusted in bolt that will just break off with a 6 point anyways. That said, I prefer 6 point most of the time because the socket itself is less likely to break, and especially for soft fasteners (anything but steel). I'll also use 6 point sockets in an impact in a pinch because they are more compact than an impact socket.
