2 is decent in modern times if you throw a mod pack at it. I think "Geralt's Improved Quality of Life" was the collection of mods I used. Took like 5 seconds to install. I personally don't care one way or the other about updated graphics, the QOL stuff (especially around combat, movement, item pickup, etc) was a must to make it enjoyable.

Otherwise the game is very rough, heck it was rough at launch.

I put several hours on this and couldn't do it anymore. It feels far too dated.

3 is amazing. 1 was a good start of the journey. 2 is pretty bad

I wouldn't. I think 2 is best place to start with these titles. 1 is very rough and feels disconnected from 2 & 3. I didn't find 2 to be nearly as bad as mentioned above, but that being said, the story is the draw here. Sets up most of the context and relationships for 3, especially if you've never read the books. If you really want a better preface still, don't play 1, read The Last Wish.

2 was amazing when it came out, it may be a bit rough now but definitely a million times better than 1.

Personally started at Witcher 3, loved it and have been trying to make it through the earlier games (playing on XBox which I'm sure doesn't help). Witcher 2 is better than 1 imo, story is great, but the controls and combat system are really bad. It's been a slog but maybe better on PC as others have mentioned mods helping.

It's doable, but would be tough coming from 3.

I have the Steam version, heads up for anyone with a Mac… they updated The Witcher 2 somewhat recently to run on Apple Silicon!

I'm going through 1 right now - it's not bad with the mods.

At one time GOG, gave you the game for free if you already own the Steam version.
