FYI Be careful of the upsells! Block's charts and marketing will try to guide you to higher versions but in about twenty five years of using Deluxe I have found nothing that it did not cover and I have very complex taxes with self employment income.

Basic, Deluxe and Premium do all the same forms only the amount of guidance changes.

Deluxe will handle almost any tax situation and guide you along for self employment, 1099, 1099K and even LLC business income along with rental income. It also handles stocks, crypto and rental income along with capital gains It handles all associated deductions, write-offs, credits and depreciation of the above.

These versions will not do true corporate taxes in which the company is a separate tax entity that pays it own taxes.

If you need to file state make sure to buy a version that includes state
Same code will get you Deluxe & State for $23.84 Note -To add state after installing it will cost you near $40, unless you re-buy the Deluxe package with State under this deal or similar, and reinstall

Some mostly free options to try first..

The free services may charge for state filing. Worthwhile to check them out if they meet your needs over the pay ones.

IRS Direct File https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-di...e-for-free Limited to 25 States in 2024. Opens on 01/27/2025

https://www.freetaxusa.com/ Fed is free most states are $15 to e-file

https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/

https://myfreetaxes.com/

https://cash.app/taxes Free federal and state.

Still holding right there with you. Either we can say we told you so when it finally hits $15-$17 or we eat crap and end up buying it for $30 in April. LOL

I have a two-state situation: I live and work in WI, but have one rental income from IL. How can I use this deal in a reasonable way? Buy a Deluxe including a state, and then buy a 2nd state in the program, or buy two Deluxe each including one state and then mess around to merge the two? Would appreciate some advice!

Will this Block version be ok if I also have to file for gig work (Doordash and Uber Eats)? Can Freetax also do that?
Yes it will.

edit: another answer after mine sounds like a better solution than what I posted

Why not just file for free using https://www.freetaxusa.com? Any benefits from using this service?
I tried them out and it is good, but in my specific circumstance I have deductions that carry over and all that is already imported from last year using the Block software. The import that freetax does just doesn't include it so I'd have to do manual entry and calculations for what is left.

I've been doing this for years: buying 1 Deluxe + State and install it on 2 different computers but choosing a different state for each. File the federal + the primary state first (primary state is the one where you work), then copy the file to the other computer to continue with the remaining state.

You may not have a choice. If you need two states, it's debatable whether it will work if you get two federal+state programs and use the same state for both. And if it does one year they may prevent it the next, leaving you with a useless second program that you can't return.
Not only that, but they also soak you on eFiling the state return (for all but NY which requires them to eFile for free -- pity all states don't do that. Even worse, even if you pay for eFiling, it does not include doing that for an extension. Fortunately the states I use (maybe all) allow you to do that at their website for free.
They do not soak you for efiling, You can only choose to be willingly soaked but that is far different thing. Don't be fool enough to pay so exorbitantly for some minor convenience and you will have more money. You do not need to hand it to someone else and only do so if you choose to. You have brain, agency and free will and can do otherwise. You are obviously concerned about money why convince yourself you have to do so to not have to put in some few minutes of extra work?

There is no requirement that you have to pay to efile state. I file taxes with this software and have never paid it and will not do so again this year. It takes away all value of the deal and is great waste of money. If I had did that for the many years I have used this I would be out a good chunk of money that is now in the market earning me income. Don't invest in convenience as it is pure waste and it breeds more lazy behavior that you will also pay some price for.

They soak for the undercoating at car dealerships if you let them, you get soaked for a sandwich when you use Doordash and you get soaked at carnival games that are almost unwinnable but wiser people just don't do it.

If I live in NY can I just buy this version instead of Deluxe + State since State filings are free or does this not allow at all?

no, taxes are "pay as you go" and are supposed to be trued up quarterly: https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-...ax-penalty

Wrong. I pay estimated tax and as long as you pay by April 15 there is no penalty. You have no idea what you are talking about.

The State edition would let you compile a return to file that is based on the numbers in your federal return. It takes you through the state version of the Q&A it does for federal. I'm not in NY but I would want a State edition even to print and mail a return.

Been using this for 4 years now. $15 to e-file your state taxes...that's it.

I've ignored that for most of my adult life and I think twice I paid some small penalty. I even ignored it with by business taxes and did not file quarterlies and the same, I think once or twice they came at me for some moderately small penalty. I did always pay my taxes due by the due date.

The last few years after they mucked things up so much I have had to pay in and get refunds no longer. The administration and the IRS messed around with withholding and kind of completely broke it and know they did. Block for the last three years has prompted me to calculate underpayment penalties. I ignored the prompet and paid my taxes in full and subsequently received no notice of any penalty.

In another tax software deal thread some SD member posted an article where the IRS issued statement stating they were not enforcing and penalizing if taxes were paid in full on the due date but they would accept it if people calculated and submitted with their returns. That kind of really sucks for those that paid it.

I'd advise everybody to stay away from you link as if you give them a chance I am sure that they will find some way to get money from you.

This is all YMMV and is only my personal experience but I don't think it a good idea to calculate bills for yourself until you know if they really need to be paid

If you start poking around in government regulations you may discover as the book title says that you commit three felonies day and break countless bureaucratic regulations but i am in no rush to turn myself in.

If one has a significant amount of unearned income (dividend, bank interest, etc.) or 1099 income that isn't covered by earned income tax deductions or quarterly tax payments, you risk a substantially high tax bill due in a short amount of time once you discover it prior to April 15. It can be more than the penalties, it can be the ability to pay on time at all if one doesn't keep their own offline cash setaside to cover that.

Plus it seems to me that's an area of low-hanging fruit for government revenue, enforcing late payment and underpaying fees.

That is true and I am aware of that risk and should have pointed it out. Thanks for doing so as that may be the biggest one.

The interest and penalties only apply if you end up owing more than $1000 due with your tax return AND the amount withheld from your paychecks was less than 90% of your total tax liability AND the amount withheld was less than your previous year's total tax liability.
