1,000 points are worth about $8. (a $200 per night hotel is about 25,000 points)

As a lifetime gold at Marriott, I can tell you the bonus qualifying night to reach gold staus is almost worthless. Platiunum is requried (50 nights per year) to get lounge access or breakfast.

Hilton and Hyatt are running double points right now.

The Marriott website (https://help.marriott.com/s/artic...icle-37210) says this is a "Global Promotion" for all members. If you cannot register, you should contact Marriott directly.
Thanks! I also had to call in to get this promo applied to my account.

You can almost always book rooms with points, but some locations or last minute reservations are super expensive in the number of points required.
I think Marriott said they'll update you X number of days beforehand on whether you would get the upgrade with using elite night depending on their room supply. I've booked plenty of times ahead of time. I think the issue is whether these elite night coupons are practical. It's one of those things where you'll have a better chance in locations with less tourists and being off season travel.

Basically. I've done this before, specifically at this property: Fairfield Inn & Suites Rapid City.

Just book a reservation like normal, and just let it go. Not many people realize that hotels don't care if you physically show up so long as they get their $$. In fact I've thought of calling up one of these (middle of nowhere) hotels and trying to bargain a discounted rate with them because your stay will cost them $0 - no free breakfast, no housekeeping, nothing.

In general though you can go to the website/app, search for however many nights you need (enter start and end dates) and a vague area - they only let you be as vague as a state. I searched some states that aren't known for tourism or big cities, then sort by price. I tried that in Mexico too but some of the lower tier properties down there (I forget the property names but we don't have them in the US) don't accumulate elite night credits.
Thanks. I thought you had to check in to get the night credit, else it is marked "no show" and no elite night credits are earned. At least that is what happened to me back in very early 2020 in Colorado Springs on a business trip that I couldn't make. Perhaps things have changed or perhaps I should have been given credit but never was.

edit: but I was still charged for the night

What's the cheapest you've been able to negotiate per night by trying to bargain a rate for not staying at the hotel?
