I'm not a gamer myself, but this system is significantly more powerful than a Raspberry Pi without a doubt. There is a Linux distro called Batocera.Linux (https://batocera.org/) that is supposedly a turn-key solution for turning mini pc's like this into gaming consoles. Besides that, this comes with an apparently legit copy of Win 11 Pro as part of the $130 price tag.

Anyway, if your goal is retro gaming, a Raspberry Pi is smaller and more energy-efficient for these types of tasks, but honestly, once you add in a case, a good power supply (RPi's are picky with respect to power...), and storage, it is probably at the same price or even more than this $130 machine. But if you are interested in more modern gaming or more powerful emulation, this system would be better and give you more flexibility for future upgrades.
Fyi check out Reddit minipc forum, some users mention that these effectively have ZERO warranty.

Just saying buyers might want to read up.
N150 is a minor bump-up from N100

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank dato

Just installed Ubuntu 24.04 on my G3 Plus (dual-boot with Windows). Everything worked fine except there's no sound through HDMI.
It turns out that N150 was so new that you need an updated Linux kernel to get the matching Intel graphics driver. Here's the command to get the kernel that fixed my problem:
$ sudo apt-get install linux-oem-24.04b

Is anyone using this as a typical desktop replacement? Ya know, Chrome web browsing, Quicken, Microsoft Office type computing? I have RARELY changed the configuration of the many PCs I have bought so why NOT go with something small like this?

They work great as a dedicated plex server / stream box. I put a 32gb ram stick in and it's been excellent for a plex box.

Can anyone recommend an M.2 2242 SATA card for this? I'd like to get a 512GB.

Yes, I plan to use my G3 Plus (16G + 512G) to replace my 10-year-old desktop with a 4th-gen i5. My testing in the past two days shows that it's more than capable of doing the things you listed.

Maybe for a small child.

I use it as a utility/test pc, its an appliance.

Its basically a chromebook in performance, the problem with N100 type cpus is the ecores are cache starved, its slow. That's not even really accurate because chromebooks now come with 2 performance cores + the 4ecores and so feel much snappier. A pcore is about the size of 4 ecores, its significant.

Put it this way, windows update slams it hard, a real desktop shrugs that off.

It does things like playback video fine because of hardware acceleration, but if you depend on the cpu its a slug.

Tbh that's a side grade, a 4th gen i5 is slightly faster than a n150 minus the gpu.

Hard to say unless you let us know what kind of CPU is in your Dell. But assuming it has the latest Intel Core CPU as of 5 years ago (10th or 11gen), then it will totally outperform this one at the expense of higher power consumption.

I do it for my main daily activities. It's with an N95. I used to have Win 11 installed, but I switched to Mint Cinnamon and absolutely love it. I'm running dual monitors on mine.Very snappy. I mostly us Firefox (although I also have Chrome installed). And I use Libreoffice instead of MS office. Quite frankly, I'm trying to get as far away from MS/Google as I can. So this is my sanctuary device. Super power efficient. Noiseless. And when I need power, I'll boot up my main rig (mostly for gaming at this point).

Have all my media on Emby server. Lots of 4k/8K atmos content.
Need something that will reliably stream it to a TV
I have LibreElec installed on one of my N95s. Why not just a Pi? Because I had an N95 lying around unused and it does a better job of it.

I've found Kodi can be a real pain with stock Linux installs. Lots of menu crashing. But running a Libreelec build for PCs is great.

A N100 handles emby/plex/jellyfin just fine, way more than enough. If your clients are able to direct play (which most do) all the decode of video happens on the client like an app on the phone, plex app on TV, or Infuse app on AppleTV.

I have N100 running jellyfin and a of other service containers in docker/proxmox. My server doesnt even have any of the media local, it reads over network from NAS and spits it back to clients, this includes full 4K discs, untouched, to as many clients in the house connects to it.

G3 Plus is much quieter, more energy efficient, and can be a real "desktop". My 4460 box can handle all my Windows need well. Frankly, if MS doesn't stop supporting Windows 10 soon I wouldn't even consider getting a replacement.

That may be so, this minipc is still more than enough to handle the apps listed in the original question. I'd recommend getting it if you don't expect your usage pattern to change much.
Side note: With Trump slapping tariffs on China and possibly on chips and other pc components from other countries down the road, this IMHO is the time to get your computing needs fulfilled before stuff become more expensive.
