In the many years of slickdeals alerts on these Amtrak deals, I have found to them impossible to use. Website is inherently f'ed. Can't just play around and see what routes are available like you can with airlines. Maybe I don't have a specific place in mind and I just want to travel

The website has always just been garbage and the prices have never been great
I think in my lifetime of riding Amtrak, there's probably a 50% chance the train I'm gonna be on has some engine problem that delays my trip several hours in some way.
I took the California Zephyr (leaves from Emeryville) from Sacramento to Chicago a few years back and it was incredible. If you're feeling a little less adventurous but are ok with one overnight, you could take it to Denver, which you pull in to towards the end of day two. This would still allow you to get the best views, in the stretch from Utah into Colorado. If you do this, I highly recommend grabbing a seat in the Observation Car for this portion of the ride.

Tempted, but that bed looks small. Dunno if I'd be able to see a few dollars and go that route w/my family vs just doing the family option itself

It's basically a fold flat chair on bottom and a flip down bunk above. Room is pretty tiny but gets the job done. If you're willing to shell out the extra bucks, the family bunks or even the regular room certainly have more space and a bathroom and shower in room.

I think since this is basically a 6 hour trip in one direction getting these $59~ seats would be SUPER fine. The only "issue" is we're only 3 folks and my wife has a fear of someone sitting next to us somehow vs say paying $200-300 for a private room.

Sixty bucks, a seat times 3, is a hundred and eighty dollars. For another $120. Get a room and your wife can chill. Maybe you'll get lucky. Like my daddy always said, It only cost a hundred percent more to go first class

Trip is 4pm to 9am
Turn down service(bed) starts about 8:00-9:00pm.

in December, Auto section was full.
But, plenty of empty seats in my car. Only people sitting next to each other were traveling together. Many chose to move to an empty seat rather than sit with the partner...LMAO.

Think about the math, 1 auto can hold 3+people.
So...

A long time ago, there was a website called bike train that allowed you to play around easily and see when the best fares were. I cannot seem to find it so maybe it is no longer around. I only did a brief look - it's tax season. IF anyone finds it, please post on here.

These prices are insane! I can buy a flight and hotel for cheaper than a train ticket.

Might as well fly for these prices, I don't see why anyone would take an Amtrak and pay hundreds for a crappy and slow train experience. I take a look every year and think the idea sounds cool until I see the prices.
