Still waiting for it to go back down to $20.
Got this guy on it's last sale at $20. Updating it was harder than I expected and it's a requirement for it to be used as a dock for more devices. But after the update it's been running perfectly as a charger and dock for my work laptop and switch or steam deck when traveling. It keeps cool when plugged in and not in use too so I feel comfortable letting it stay plugged in vs other outlet like docks in the same price range. Highly recommend it.
Same here, this isn't bad but sad to say, a precedent was set at $20. 🫣

You have to use a USB-C cable with video capability for this to actually work right?

So, is this essentially a very portable micro-dock?
Can this be used with a laptop as long as the USB-C is PD/video capable?

No. The USB-C port is used to power the Ally and it has an HDMI port to connect a monitor and a USB-A port for a peripheral, be it a keyboard, mouse, external storage etc. Mine works just fine with the included cable and I connect it to my monitor.
If the only connection to the handheld or laptop is the USB-C cable,, and you are getting functioning HDMI out, wouldn't the USB-C cable NEED to be able to transmit video? Of course. If you just used a USB-C charging cable (no data, just power), it would be impossible for the HDMI or USB-A to function.

The answer to the previous question is YES, your USB-C cable has to have video capability and not be just a charging cable that does power only.

Regardless, it does come with a cable already so unless you needed a longer cable, this isn't really an issue.

Got it! I guess I've been lucky with the USB-C cables I have that work with it for video.

Yeah, you can use this with a laptop, tablet, phone, etc. to both charge your device and output it to a monitor via HDMI (assuming its through a thunderbolt port on your laptop or a usb c phone/tablet). Works with the Switch too after a firmware update.

I'm guessing the best chance at it lowering to that again is black friday. Doesn't seem like the last couple of deals got that low.

How reliable has it been? I have the same thing (2 in fact) from another brand (acefast on amazon), but for some reason it doesn't work all the time, and I can't quite figure out if it has to do with the order I plug something in. I'll get it working, unplugging/replugging stuff, and then the next time it won't work, and the same order that worked this time may not work next time.
