OTOH, I have a cinder block "incinerator" that is perfectly legal here and will easily make 2 yrs of fallen limbs burned into ash in one day. For the first 10 minutes, I have to use dry wood, but after that, any sort of wood, even green leaves will burn almost smokeless. It isn't very pretty, but I just put it behind a bush and let the neighbors know when I'll be burning stuff.
Seems everyone is a little firebug and comes over to watch and cook marshmallows on a stick.
Burning is allowed here for 3 reasons.
1. Cooking anything.
2. Evening social fires
3. Burning brush FROM THE PROPERTY.
Brush burning is only allowed Oct 1 - April 30 each year from 10am until dusk. They don't want people burning early in the morning, since it can cause fog if the fire isn't hot enough.
This things aren't smokeless initially, but within a few minutes, they do burn really hot and due to the extra oxygen mix, they do burn smokeless. Yes, these do work. You can watch videos to see it or build your own ... or for $10, just buy one of these for your next car camping trip. These are too large for backpacking, IMHO.
You'll probably need something more than 4x larger than this model. It is meant for car camping to boil 2 cups of water in a smokeless way using found wood. Around here, we aren't allowed to bring any wood camping with us. Only local wood to the campsite can be used. That will mostly be small sticks and pine needles, which is good for this sized stove.
I've made and collected a number of small stoves over the years. Made a similar smokeless stove using a small new paint can and drilled some holes following youtube plans. I think the Solo Stove ripped off those plans, just like this company ripped off the Solo Stove company. For backpacking over a weekend, I prefer a beer can alcohol stove. It is small and carrying 4oz of alcohol will allow 4 hot meals. Plus the tiny 1.5inch tall can stove is very space efficient. Lots of youtube videos about these with how to make them in about 10 minutes using tin snips and thumbtacks.
I have a few fold-flat stoves that are portable, but not smokeless. The combustion never gets hot enough to go smokeless. At least they were cheap.
For this stove, you'll still need some sort of wire or mesh stand to set the pot or skillet onto with 1-2 inch clearance from the top. Or a fire-safe tripod to hang over the flame. And you'll need a safe way to lift the pot from that stand when it has boiling water inside. There will be soot on the outside of whatever pot you use, so a light coat of Dawn before cooking is useful to just wipe away the soot later.
These smaller stoves aren't meant for gathering the entire family around to roast marshmallows.
