If someone asked me how to make a free mobile data plan, my very first thought would be "control its DNS, packet-inspect everything on my network so I can tell who's doing what, sell that info to data brokers, advertisers, marketing agencies, etc., and insert enough legalese to my long-AF-that-nobody-reads-it terms of service that it's totally OK for me to do that." Classic case of "if it's free, it's because you are the product."

If you think I'm joking, check your own current paid ISP plan's terms of service. Non-trivial probability they're already doing similar to you, at least if you're not protected by something like the EU's GDPR.

Is that what's going on here, or is their business model different somehow?
Right now their 20$ a month plan turns out to cost a couple of dollars a month if you opt in to their location tracking. They are trying to build a network of hotpots to fill in what traditional cell towers miss. Turn on tracking and they map whenever they hit one of their hotspots. Then they try to get new ones in empty areas.

Anyways...So they will pay you in their crypto token., Which they then accept as payment.Or you can sell yourself. Im assuming they are going to expand on this somehow.

Also a while back they were talking about another app that carriers were going to opt into that allows people to use each others phones a a hotspot for a small fee.
Just a guess but maybe something with this as well.

They are not the only company going this way there are going to be some announcements very soon of others going this path
I gave them my email address for spam, so we'll see. Right now it looks like they just offer one plan -- $20/mo for unlimited.

Id verification didn't work. Id went through but facial scan didn't match it. Couldn't try again….

sounds like it. lots of talk on reddit with similar situations. they are no doubt being hammered right now, so maybe it'll work out in the end.

i was tempted to give it a try but with all the privacy concerns and the issues they are having signing people up, i'm gonna wait it out awhile. I got enough Freedompop and FreeUp free plans to manage already at this point. This one is tempting due to the extra data, so i'll just watch and see how it works.
Which subreddit ? Couldn't find much talk about failed verification. Mine failed and tried to sign up with another email address and couldn't .

I was excited to hear but hearing ID verification is required, Hard Pass.

I don't want my facial, home address, email, phone number fed to hackers on a silver platter.

One zero plan per person. That is why ID verification exists. The Zero plan however is not limited to one per household. Each person in the household just just needs to signup using their own ID.

I know there were people complaining about failed signup attempts Wednesday morning. Not sure if it has been since fixed or not.

There is/was a glitch where users on the free plan were getting throttled to 64kbps after using 512mb of data. Helium replied by asking the customer to email [email protected] so they can adjust some settings on their account.

The 3gb given to free users is supposed to be prioritized data. I have heard conflicting reports whether data stops at 3gb or not. Will have to wait a little bit to find that correct answer.

Helium has a webpage where they show exactly how many users have signed up for their service. Before the announcement of a free plan, they had about 124,000 signups. Two days later, they are now around 129,000. Helium said they would be thrilled to reach 1,000,000 by the end of 2025. Seems a bit optimistic to me to think of numbers that large, but we shall see.

I'm currently doing masters and as part of online exams I need to send them a copy of my DL along with selfie. Otherwise they will disqualify you. Wondering what is the difference between that and Helium Id verification?

Just wondering can I have their service on any non smart phone? I have one old Sprint CDMA phone just wanted to see if it's even possible?
Also, how do we even sign up? once I click the free plan, it's taking me to a page where they are asking to download their app and hence the question

Having to keep location services on will drain your phone battery much quicker.

Are there options to add minutes and number of messages? What would happen if a user turns off location sharing?

Do they still have it? Is the plan, any of theirs, worth for kids emergency type deal
I've been using Helium since they first launched in Miami; saw a billboard when I was in town once and signed up for the $5 plan. The service has been reliable and speeds are fast. I wouldn't hesitate using them esp for a kids' line.

I know they were still offering $5/mo unlimited for location specific (for sure Miami, maybe SF too?). If you can still sign up for it, i'd do it asap!
Unfortunately I don't have use for a second Unltd line right now, even for $5 so I didn't move forward with that option. I saw in another thread somewhere that trying to get the $5 offer resulted in another message saying their location wasn't eligible. I was able to sign up for the Zero plan though, and am waiting on my sim card as I prefer the pSIM for more flexibility swapping between devices.

I am wondering though, if you can enable location sharing "while using the app only" and still qualify for the Zero plan, or if they will warn you to enable full time access first. They don't seem to give a lot of details on this. Also wondering if there is Hotspot.

Surprised they can offer 3 GB data but only 300 talk and 100 texts. I would think the talk minutes and texts would be cheaper for them to offer. If they had more talk minutes and texts, then it could possibly be a main line for someone.

This can def still be a main line for someone. I have a friend who every time he used to call, would only limit our conversation to <1 minute and when texting would fill the whole character limit like back in the days when text didn't used to be free

Use Google voice then this can be your main line. You just use data for call/text
