If someone asked me how to make a free mobile data plan, my very first thought would be "control its DNS, packet-inspect everything on my network so I can tell who's doing what, sell that info to data brokers, advertisers, marketing agencies, etc., and insert enough legalese to my long-AF-that-nobody-reads-it terms of service that it's totally OK for me to do that." Classic case of "if it's free, it's because you are the product."

If you think I'm joking, check your own current paid ISP plan's terms of service. Non-trivial probability they're already doing similar to you, at least if you're not protected by something like the EU's GDPR.

Is that what's going on here, or is their business model different somehow?

Right now their 20$ a month plan turns out to cost a couple of dollars a month if you opt in to their location tracking. They are trying to build a network of hotpots to fill in what traditional cell towers miss. Turn on tracking and they map whenever they hit one of their hotspots. Then they try to get new ones in empty areas.

Anyways...So they will pay you in their crypto token., Which they then accept as payment.Or you can sell yourself. Im assuming they are going to expand on this somehow.

Also a while back they were talking about another app that carriers were going to opt into that allows people to use each others phones a a hotspot for a small fee.
Just a guess but maybe something with this as well.

They are not the only company going this way there are going to be some announcements very soon of others going this path

I gave them my email address for spam, so we'll see. Right now it looks like they just offer one plan -- $20/mo for unlimited.

Uploaded My ID, took photos of my face, then it told me the identity verification failed! Then it would let me try again. I feel like I got scammed already.
Same.

Got the Helium eSIM on primary phone. Then, deleted the app and redownloaded it on an old spare phone. Let it track me whatever blah blah. That way, I can take my primary phone wherever and won't get tracked my movements AND can save my battery. Genius!

I remember trying to get on the $5 plan but it was limited to Miami and even after rooting my pixel xl I couldn't get the app to believe I lived there. Sad.

Can we delete the app after installing with no ill effects?

Are we limited to only one plan per person? I have 3 iphone 12s that I use around the house as cordless phones, would love for each to have their own plan.

Those steps certainly help. The one thing I'll point out is that you'd want at least a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 instead of just a 3b+ or lesser if you're setting up something like a pi-hole. The CPU/RAM on a 3b+ can meet the minimum requirements for pi-hole just fine, but the ethernet on the 3b+ is gigabit in name only. It goes through the 3b+'s USB 2.0 interface, bottlenecking it to 300Mbps at best. Source: https://www.raspberrypi.com/produ...el-b-plus/
I ran Pi Hole on a Pi Zero W for years, the original version with a single core and 512mb ram. It worked fine. The wifi was only good for about 2MB/s but DNS traffic is trivial.
Right on their requirements page, it states 512mb ram. https://docs.pi-hole.net/main/prerequisites/

Dealt with helium mobile before and boy, that was a nightmare if you will have to deal with any issues. If their stupid approaches did magically somehow work for you - you definitely should play the lottery since chances to get a jackpot for you are really high Wink but for me it was a huge pain in the arse. Just as an example as of now: I just decided to give it one more try and tried to reactivate the plan with a free one. Obviously everything is glitchy AF and no luck here. Pinged support and they told me literally to FO and get registered with a new e-mail. Lol. After that they expect me to create a random email and provide my ID to them? With such huge issues upon general release of the product how can one expect data safety and good security practices from companies like that? Just my 2 cents here.

Has anyone received an email saying their sim card has shipped? Wondering how long it takes.

I requested a SIM on the date of sign-up (Feb 4). SIM arrived yesterday (Feb 10). Came in a padded USPS envelope. Don't think they sent tracking info, but the USPS informed delivery service notified me. Easily activated.

Always change your home ISP DNS to a public DNS.

The free deal requires you to surrender your facial biometric data and a scan of your official government ID to a third-party company for identity verification. I'm not sure why your address and credit card information wouldn't be sufficient, and I don't understand why they would opt for such extreme and privacy-invasive measures to sign you up for their service.
No thanks.
