If someone asked me how to make a free mobile data plan, my very first thought would be "control its DNS, packet-inspect everything on my network so I can tell who's doing what, sell that info to data brokers, advertisers, marketing agencies, etc., and insert enough legalese to my long-AF-that-nobody-reads-it terms of service that it's totally OK for me to do that." Classic case of "if it's free, it's because you are the product."

If you think I'm joking, check your own current paid ISP plan's terms of service. Non-trivial probability they're already doing similar to you, at least if you're not protected by something like the EU's GDPR.

Is that what's going on here, or is their business model different somehow?

Right now their 20$ a month plan turns out to cost a couple of dollars a month if you opt in to their location tracking. They are trying to build a network of hotpots to fill in what traditional cell towers miss. Turn on tracking and they map whenever they hit one of their hotspots. Then they try to get new ones in empty areas.

Anyways...So they will pay you in their crypto token., Which they then accept as payment.Or you can sell yourself. Im assuming they are going to expand on this somehow.

Also a while back they were talking about another app that carriers were going to opt into that allows people to use each others phones a a hotspot for a small fee.
Just a guess but maybe something with this as well.

They are not the only company going this way there are going to be some announcements very soon of others going this path

I gave them my email address for spam, so we'll see. Right now it looks like they just offer one plan -- $20/mo for unlimited.

Welcome to the club like everyone else. I've been trying to get my parents signed up for the past 3 days and the identity verification doesn't work. Their support is a joke and I'm just constantly told "it's been escalated to the back end team, we'll update you when we have anything". Interestingly, my identity verification worked the first time without any issue.

this is pretty good if most of your friends use imessage/rcs. the minutes total is a bit concerning, 100 goes by quick, wish that was a little higher. no real shortcut to that other than using whatsapp etc

EDIT: actually wifi calling doesnt not count towards your minutes, so this plan is really good. does anyone know if i can port my number ot this?

Yes, you can. I did it and worked like a charm.

warning. warning. warning. (ala-minions) we don't talk about bruno.

for those thinking of uninstalling the app or switching off location [or removing other permissions such as allow location all the time or precise location or physical activity or allow app to control wifi], i received an email today (attached) with subject "Your Location Sharing is off!". they are checking and need location sharing.

But if we install the app on spare phone, that would work?

To be CLEAR. It's GSM compatible versus CDMA (Verizon). AT&T, T-mobile use GSM.

Your information is 4 years out of date. Verizon decommissioned their CDMA (pre-4G technology) towers and is now LTE and NR only. You do not need a CDMA compatible phone any more.

T Mobile compatible in this case means it has the important T Mobile LTE and NR bands.

I had never heard of Textnow until your post so I just checked it out and I have to say it's not even comparable to Helium. Textnow doesn't support eSIM's and requires a physical SIM. Without a physical SIM, which none of my phones support anymore, Textnow is no different than any other phone number/app like Google Voice, etc. Helium is an actual dedicated phone number on my phone. In my opinion having just checked out Textnow it's like comparing apples and oranges to Helium, they're two completely different things.
Helium and TextNow are definitely 'different things'. But there is a difference between TextNow and 'any other' VoIP provider: you can buy a TextNow SIM card for a one-time $5 cost that allows your VoIP number to work anywhere you have cellular coverage. As far as I know, it's the only provider that offers something similar.

Perhaps. I think it's trivial for them to verify the app and SIM are both in the same device, if they desire to. I know some other services with similar requirements could be easily evaded, and some could not.

Damn this app kills the battery on my S24+ with the background location constantly on. I have turned off background access to this app so it no longer stays awake draining the battery when not in use. Doesn't seem to impact the data plan as Helium still thinks it has the full time location access, even though only when the app is being used.
I experienced the same massive battery drain issue. I had my phone in my pocket and went out for a 3-hour walk (in the city). The phone was only used for taking less than 10 pictures. The battery capacity went down from 97% to 25%. I just turned off its background usage. Let's see how it goes.

most likely, yes since you're logged into that app on the spare phone. i think they're just checking that the account you used to sign-up with has location-enabled and is pinging them regularly. imagine leaving it at home and them scratching their heads and saying "oh poor guy never leaves home. he must be so lonely." 🙃

Out of curiosity how many people are experiencing identity verification issues? It worked for me no problem on the first try. I'm trying to get my parents signed up so they can have secondary lines on their phone, but they're both failing the identity verification. Opened tickets with Helium support on Thursday 2/13 and their support is a joke. Nothing helpful and after 3 days it's the same "we've escalated to the back end team and have no update".

I have a Google Pixel 6a. When trying to create wi-fi profile, I'm getting "You must grant Wi-Fi control permission via Settings by going to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Wi-Fi control > HeliumMobile and toggling it to enabled. Tap here for more info" I have the Wi-Fi enabled but still getting this error. Tapping here goes to the page but it says "uh oh the page doesn't exist"
Does anyone have any ideas?

i'm curious

someone do a before and after battery test

if this kills battery lifespan quickly, i'm not sure this is worth it.
You guys are gonna be doing a shitton of battery charge cycles.
