There's this. This is the cheapest I've seen in a while. In case you don't know, the speed doesn't matter, whatsoever. There's a common misconception about that. No game uses anywhere close to the full bandwidth of SSDs, so whether you have one with a speed of 3,200 or 7,000, they load and run games the same. I know that from firsthand experience, but Digital Foundry also tested it and said the same thing. Mine only has a speed of 3,600 and it loads everything just as quickly as my friend's 7,000 SSD. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B9Y3DB2K
While I agree that the speed is not that important during gameplay. It makes a difference during initial setup and game install from disc or when you copy from drive to drive. This is also why it's important to keep the m.2 as cool as possible, and why everyone recommends a good heatsink. Not all m.2 ssd use the same voltage and is why there is a list of Sony recommended drives that stay within the sony spec. The higher priced drives will typically use a better chip that requirs less voltage there by producing less heat.

Does this work for SSDs installed in a PC as well?

After watching the installation video, my guess is probably not.

I don't know enough about these things, but does an SSD really run so hot that you need a heatsink for them? Seems like overkill, but maybe I'm very mistaken here.

Doesn't work with a PC it's held down by a screw in the PS5.
you would need an adhesive to attach it to a PC drive

NVMe drives require cooling because their controller chips can generate significant heat when transferring large amounts of data at high speeds, and if they overheat, they will throttle their performance to protect themselves, meaning you won't get the full potential speed of the drive; this is especially true for newer, faster PCIe Gen 4 and Gen 5 NVMe SSDs
and the PS5 needs it even more because of the poor airflow through the drive housing

The PS5 actually needs it less, because very little heat hits that spot. A lot of people have skipped using a heat sink with their PS5, and they've been fine. I put one in, just because why not? It's still safer that way, but no, the PS5 does not get that hot where the secondary SSD goes.

Not the teardown I watched, the SSD was right on top of the GPU heatsinks. And in the listing for this heatsink it even shows the poor airflow of the stock system.

Little heat hits that spot, are you serious? The SSD itself is what heats up. The issue isn't so much that the consoles other parts heat up the SSD. The NVME slot is in an enclosed space with not much ventilation, it needs cooling somehow.
Your "a lot of people" will have premature drive failure. The drives won't die immediately, but they will cook themselves over time.

Yes they do need a heatsink, especially a pcie gen 4 drive. It will thermal throttle very quickly without one.

Ideally you want the average temp of an nvme to be around 40-50 degrees. When it hits 70+b the drive will throttle and the lifespan will decrease. I'm rocking the Crucial T705, the current fastest Gen 5 on the market and the average temp is about 52 degree using the motherboard's own heatsink. I'm going to replace it with a beefier heatsink to bring down the temp even though I really don't need to. But it's better to be safe than sorry I guess. And I like to tinker with my built.
