$500 for a 5-year old refurb, non-removable battery, and 8gb of RAM. Apple can't even bother to offer 10 years support like ChromeOS. What a smokin deal.

Same 5-year old comment.
This 5-year old 8GB RAM refurb can still outperform and outlast a 12th or 13th Gen intel laptop easily. For productivity, this is still a very good option.

8gb is a scam.

Just buy a new one where they admit 16gb is the bare min needed to use features theyre rolling out later this year.

Sure, why not? Go ahead, spend another $250, and get yourself one with 16GB.

I make music using Logic Pro. I edit 1080p videos (10-15min long) just fine. There's nothing it can't do for now. Buy if you need a decent laptop.

Seems like a great deal if you get a battery in good condition but not sure how you guarantee that.

Obviously OP knows different OS and ecosystem - difficult to generalize outperformance especially at this <$500 price point. I suppose this *could* be a good deal if battery ends up being new or with a small # of cycles. Personally I'd go for a $500-$600 open box with OLED screen.

For this price there are options with more storage/RAM, but you'd be hard pressed to find comparable CPU power, build quality, and overall fit and finish. This is getting down into the territory of those miserable plastic Dells with trash TN 1366x768 screens.

Great points. Here is one with OLED 120hz screen that'll outperform this, for media consumption, web browsing, basic computing.
$550 new. $450 open box.

Solid deal for a < $500 laptop. Unless you have an explicit need for more RAM, you can't beat the form factor, chassis, processor or screen at this price.

Also note that the "Like New" refurb condition guarantees at least 80% battery capacity - that's about 12 hours of active web browsing if true, much better than anything else at this price point. Still likely better even if it's down to 50% capacity.
